Ink by S.J. Davis Review and Guest Post

I'm so happy to have S.J. Davis, author of INK, with us today sharing her thoughts on creating characters.

Creating Characters

When characters begin to reside “in my head,” I usually discover that they are actually based on someone I know or someone I care for in my real life. I suppose I am an unrepentant thief. I steal all kinds of qualities, quirks, and habits from people close to me and even from total strangers. Although there is no one character in INK who matches up perfectly with someone from my real world, I couldn’t ever say that my characters wouldn’t be recognizable – though I do create horrible, but fictional, circumstances for them to muddle through.
For me, everything starts with the story – usually a dilemma or obstacle set in a certain time period or life event. The plot usually spins around in my head for a bit and then the characters arrive to take their place. They sort of evolve and jump out at me on their own. As they are “born,” their backstory becomes very real, even if those details aren’t part of the narrative for the reader. For example, my main character Sparrow has lost her mother and begins to hear a strange voice. On the outside, she seems to cope and plod through school and life in a relatively controlled manner. But only as I wrote more about her could see why.  I swear it was as if Sparrow suddenly told me what she was doing. In the dark, behind everyone’s back, she would cut herself. This is how she dealt with her pain, and was ultimately something she would overcome as she moved into a more self-confident place.
I get some questions about who is Layne or who is Mateo, and do they exist? Next, of course, can you introduce me? Layne is very closely based on Layne Staley, a lead singer many of us “older” folk remember. His mannerisms and appearance is really how he existed, to me anyway. And Mateo is like many men I have known (my husband, my father, and nephew Jordan) who are just as beautiful, handsome, kind, and self-effacing. But mostly, Mateo is just Mateo.

INK
By S J Davis
Genre: paranormal YA

“It’s a good day to die.” My mother holds my arm fiercely. “But as you grieve for me, listen for the voices. Then, you must get the ink.”

***
Sparrow stumbles between two worlds – light and dark, love and hate, what is real and what is in her mind. When her mother dies on the Reservation, Sparrow’s world is shadowed with anger and narrowed by pain. The voices arrive, but are they real?  And how can a tattoo make her stronger?

Mateo arrives to guard Sparrow, but from whom? Layne holds on to Sparrow, but why? As the voices grow stronger and her pain expands, Sparrow finds that the shadows in the corner and the voices we fear most are the ones inside ourselves.

About the Author:

SJ Davis is the daughter of an ex-patriate British mother and a Southern Baptist ex-CIA father. As a child, she spoke in silly accents and recounted outlandish tales of fantasy over afternoon tea and to this day it remains her favorite activity. Born in Long Island, NY, she was raised in the suburbs of Washington DC and went to school for a very long time (University of Virginia and George Mason University), married an all-around wonderful man, had two kids (smart, funny, full of opinions), moved from Virginia to New Jersey to Philadelphia to Chicago, and began her writing career. She is a believer in fate, an avid tea drinker, a stiletto aficionado, Doc Marten worshipper, punk rock listener, and lover of flip flops and cardigans. She has a terrible sense of direction, loves gummy bears, and is a Johnny Depp fangirl.

My thoughts on INK:
I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to join the INK blog tour. INK is such a captivating short story with an original idea and intense, fascinating characters. I was quickly drawn into Sparrow's life, her pain, her visions, and the idea of a mystical tattoo. My only complaint with INK is that it was short. I know, I know it's a short story so it's very nature is that it's short. Usually I'm okay with that, but this time I really wanted so much more of these wonderful characters and the story in general. So really my complaint is a good thing. The story was so great that I just wanted more! I am already looking forward to reading more by S.J. Davis.

Neurotic Thoughts on Fate Fixed (Book Tour)

Summary from Goodreads:

When Lexie Anderson’s mother suddenly announces she is marrying a Romanian immigrant, Lexie willingly leaves behind her busy life in Connecticut for her penance in “The Moose Capital of the World.” Small town living is strange enough, now Lexie must cope with her overbearing stepfamily monitoring her every move. They disappear into the woods at night and keep a strange secret locked in their shed. Just when she decides she wants to be with Torin forever, she must fight to protect her mother and sister from being harmed a formidable evil.

Fate Fixed was one of those books that grabbed me right from the beginning. The plot and characters are different enough to stand out from the oodles of YA paranormal romance novels that I've read. That's really important to me because honestly, some of them are so similar they start to run together and I forget which one is which.

Lexie's character really made my heart ache. She is such a sweet girl that has had an incredibly rough year, and even though she carries a lot of guilt, she really tries to make her family happy. Let me tell you, making her unique family happy is not an easy task by anyone's standards, especially with her creepy stepbrothers hovering around, and her mother's bizarre behavior.

Speaking of her mother's behavior... the only problem I really had with this story was the way Lexie dealt with her. The problem being she didn't. She recognized that something was wrong, but she never really tried very hard to find out what it was. I got that she was trying not to rock the boat. However, your mom is literally pulling her hair out, and you just gloss over it telling your self she is "just adjusting". Dig a little deeper girl, this is your mother!

Torin's character is definitely likable. He is honorable, strong, and of course dreamy to read about. My favorite thing about Torin is how wonderful he is with Lexie. The connection between these two is so pure and complete. The kind of love worth dreaming about. Torin has one of the best families I have ever read about.  His cousins are his best friends, and the banter between them was light, and fun spirited. You could really feel how much Torin's parents loved each other and their son. As weird and creepy as Lexie's family were, Torin's family was loving and respectful, there was never any doubt with them that they had your back, always.

My only wish for this book would be that I wanted more of Lexie's best friend Liz. She was an awesome character that didn't get a lot of face time in this novel because of the move and Lexie's mother. She is an awesome character and I'm happy that my wish will be granted in book 2.

I enjoyed the way that the author kept you guessing about the secrets that Torin and Lexie's families were keeping. The plot was twisting and turning so much that I stayed up late into the night to find out what would happen. I kept thinking that I knew what was going on only to be thrown for another loop.  I loved how the author revealed the back stories of each family. Needless to say, I'm very excited to read Blood Twist (An Erris Coven Novel, #2) coming in 2012 (which is way to far away for my liking).

Join me tomorrow for a chance to win your very own copy of Fate Fixed!

The Demon Side by Heaven Liegh Eldeen Interview and Book Promo!

When worlds collide… Every kid has problems. Every kid has even more problems when they move to a new home. But when a kid with problems moves to a new home that has a Demon living inside it—look out! Etta’s world is about to spin out of control when she encounters her new roommate—and Rahovart, that ancient trickster, is in for a few surprises too. So don’t mind all the crashing and rumbling; that’s just the normal noise Angels and Demons make when they’re fighting an epic war in the attic. One thing’s for sure: Etta and Rahovart will have to go through Hell to Heaven and back again before that old Victorian home in Quantico Town finally quiets down…

Excerpt:
Etta plopped back onto her bed and stared at the ceiling for a few moments. I wished I could hear her thoughts. Her father had just admitted to being a murderer for all practical purposes, though that was not how I viewed him. I truly believed John only tried to save the village, but his fervour and some help from a desperate Alastor, turned what should have been a heroic act into a bloodbath. Many men have unknowingly fallen from grace in the name of the greater good. Now, hopefully Etta would see that her father was just the victim of blurred lines between good and evil.
“What are you thinking?” I asked as I lay down next to her on the bed.
“Can a person still go to Heaven even if they've killed someone?”
“Well, I'm not in the business of getting people to Heaven, Etta. That's the last place I want them to go,” I reluctantly replied.
“Even if it were me?” Etta stared hard at me with watery eyes, looking right into my blackened soul. I never gave much thought to where her soul would go, except to stop her from mistakenly giving it to me.
“That is a choice for you to make. I can't force you to choose a side. I can only put the temptations in front of you.”
“You didn't answer my question.”
“What do you want me to say? I want to see you burn in the depths of Hell? You'll never hear that from me. Only you and your actions can decide where you go when you leave this world.”
“I would go if it meant I could be with you, you know.”
“You don't know what you're talking about.” As much as I would have loved for that to be the case, her comment angered me. I couldn't imagine a person like her becoming something like me.
“I know that when you're around I feel safe nothing could ever hurt me. I get butterflies in my stomach when you touch me. I know your soul, Ra. I don't know how, but I know. I knew it the second I saw you. You weren't meant for this existence. You fought for good once, and I'm certain you will again.” Etta was strong in words. She spoke with solid confidence. She described what I felt.

Hello and today I would like to welcome Heaven Liegh Eldeen to My Neurotic Book Affair. She has so graciously agreed to be interviewed.

First, tell us a little about yourself so the readers know who you are?

Thank you for having me, Shari. I currently live in California, where I grew up, with my husband and prince of darkness, and Legos, a.k.a my son. I enjoy moonlit walks on the beach…oh, wait, wrong questionnaire. As you can see, I am a serious goofball. Yeah, figure that oxymoron out. Aside from writing, I spend my days doing dishes, kissing owies, obsessing over my Facebook page, and pretending I'm listening when my husband talk about his work.

2) What made you decide to write? Was it something you accidentally began? Or what you wanted to do? Or annoying character who refused to leave until their story was told?

My writing career began with a rivalry between my sister in law Echo and myself. For years we would go fist to cuffs until finally we took a survey of the collateral damages our feuds caused. In an effort to put an end to the squabbling, she gave me a vampire book for my birthday. It was far from the genre I enjoyed reading, but I had to give it a chance, in an effort for peace. A few months and fifteen vampire books later, I expressed to her I wanted something new. She responded with a snippy “Oh, you think you can do better?” Her reply was intended to be a shot at me but I took it as a challenge. Four months later, my first novel was complete and the love for writing had made its home deep within me.

3) I love hearing about first acceptances as an aspiring writer can you tell us a bit about yours?

Before I received my first acceptance letter, I was really questioning my abilities as a writer. Rejection letter, after rejection letter filled my inbox. No company I sent my pitch to would even read my manuscript due to my lack of credentials and education. I couldn't really blame them to be honest. I knew being a high school drop out with no writing experience would be a tough sale. And though the rejection letters took a toll on me every now and then, I wasn't going to give up so easily.
Then the big day finally came. No joke, when I read The Demon Side's acceptance letter from Decadent Publishing I cried like a baby for a good hour. I called my husband at work, I couldn't speak, I couldn't breathe, which totally scared him. Fearing an emergency my husband came zooming home. He didn't even clear his motorcycle in the garage when I flung myself into his arms balling my eyes out. He squeezes me and says “Okay baby, tell me why I'm about to go to prison for killing someone.” The man still hadn't figured out I was crying because I was happy.
Finally gathering my composure I told him that my novel was going to be published. Before I could let go of him he began jumping up and down, still holding onto me. We stood there hugging for a good thirty minutes. It is one of my most precious moments ever!

4) Tell us about your current release? Where can readers pick up their own copy?

The Demon Side centers around Rahovart, a Demon banished to Earth over five hundred years ago. For centuries, he spends his free time feeding himself on the fear he creates by scaring Quantico, Virginia locals. A master of his craft, Rahovart doesn't think twice when a new family, the Divad's, move into the Victorian home he dwells in.
With a workaholic father, an alcoholic step-mother and a schizophrenic eighteen year old girl, the dysfunctional family unknowingly offers the perfect arsenal for Rahovart to plan his tricks. That is until he learns their daughter; Etta can not only see Demons but is already being tormented by Alastor, an incubus. What starts as a turf war between him, Alastor and the Arch Angels, soon becomes a battle deep within Rahovart of good versus evil and more importantly love versus hate.
The Demon Side will be available through decadentpublishing.com October 21st, 2011.

5) What are you currently writing?

I am currently putting the finishing touches on The Human Side, sequel to The Demon Side as well as four other novels. I have written another novel, Vineyard House, which is currently in the revision process, so hopefully here soon it will be in editing!

6) What inspires you most when you write?

Apart from personal life experiences, my family definitely inspires me, without a doubt, to move up and forward. Of course, I must give credit to music as well. A ton of songs on my IPod have given me the courage to push myself farther than I ever imagined I could.

7) What experiences have you had working with your publisher/s?

Everyone at Decadent Publishing has been fabulous from day one. Not once have I felt out of my league. They have been great, walking me through every process step by step and answering my million and one questions about the process as a whole. A special thanks has to go to my editor, Terry MacFarland, since she caught the brunt of most of my newbie questions.

8) What are you reading now?

I am currently reading What Tangled Webs by Dan Dillard. Filled with incredibly scary and yet hilarious short stories, I can't put it down. Next on my “to read” list is 'Steamside Chronicles' by Ciar Cullen. I absolutely love her work.

9) What are your guilty pleasures?

Besides hiding the bacon from my husband? I enjoy so much in the world, but none you could say is a guilty pleasure. I do have pleasures that may end up in me having to plead guilty, such as taste testing grapes at the super market. Yes I am that lady!

10) What would be your advice, if any, for other aspiring authors?

It sounds corny and I am sure you have all heard it all too often, but no advices rings truer than never…ever…never give up. Every rejection letter is one step closer to an acceptance letter. And remember, your success can only be measured by what you put in the scales.

This is for you to talk more about yourself, leave your blogging details, site details and generally promote yourself.

A few months ago, I had the pleasure of working with twelve other outstanding authors on a short horror story, which you can read at http://www.scareitforward.com. Also, you can always find me posting excerpts, character interviews and bios, along with a few other snippets, on my blog at http://heavenliegheldeen.blogspot.com. Want to know more? Neurotic Thoughts on Caged in Darkness by J.D. Stroube

Caged in Darkness (Caged #1)
Author: J.D. Stroube
Released: July 29, 2011
Genre: YA Paranormal
Published by: J.D. Stroube
Source: Received from the author
"I received this book free of charge in exchange for an
honest review"
Pages: 178
ISBN: 1466362367
Summary from Goodreads:
A witch raised in a cage of darkness...

Savannah Cross was born into a life of isolation and abuse.
As a child, she witnessed her parents perform acts of malevolent evil, and now feels permanently tainted by their dark deeds.

When a coven discovers a tear stricken child,
wounded on their elders lawn, they offer her a sanctuary she has never known. Savannah spends the next several years shattered, continuously looking over her shoulder, waiting for the darkness to claim her.

On her 16th birthday,
Savannah’s life takes a drastic turn. She is consumed by overwhelming power that forever alters her emotionally and physically.

She must choose between two loves; the one who taught her to smile or the darkly seductive stranger who tempts her towards another path.

Savannah must decide between the coven that was her haven
and another one vying for her initiation. Just as Savannah begins to grasp what fate has in store for her, an evil looms over her loved ones; coming to claim an unbreakable debt.

How will she survive the greatest evil she has ever witnessed… long enough to have a choice to make?

Love Notes:
  • I love how strong Savannah is! Not to be confused with emotionally available, that she is not.
  • Maye, Savannah's foster "aunt" she seemed more like an aunt to me than a mom, was awesome. She wasn't a missing in action "parent" but she wasn't up in the teens business all the time either.
  • Ash - there are things I loved about Ash, and things that really irked me about him. On one hand he can be really sweet, and takes care of Savannah the way a good "brother" or "boyfriend" would. (I'll get to the other hand of him in just a minute.)
  • Savannah's friends, Izzy and Willow! True friends each with their own personalities that I couldn't help but love.
  •  Having characters that were easy to hate or at the very least extremely dislike really added to the story. (More on this in the grievances)
  • I loved how original  this book felt, I can honestly say I haven't read another story that reminded me of this one.
  • The twists and turns at the end of the book were fabulous.
  • I really enjoyed how the author uses Savannah's memories of her parents to convey their downward spiral into the darkness.
  • The romance and how it was handled in the end was a complete surprise, and one that I felt really worked wonderfully in this story.
  • That cover! It truly is GORGEOUS!

Airing of the Grievances:
(let it be known that my grievances aren't problems with the writing of the story, more like things that made me growl and groan during the reading of the book. these can actually be things that made the story better.)
  • Back to Ash - what was up with the way he let his friends treat Savannah?  I had a really hard time loving him because of this. In fact this is probably the biggest grievance I have with this entire book.
  • Isis and Griffin are jerks! I can't figure out why Ash is friends with them. He actually admits to not liking Isis, but continues to hang out with her because of Griffin.
  • Let's just say Griffin wouldn't be my best friend.
  • Liam - he's as spineless as he is pretty. Enough said!
To Sum it All Up:

Caged in Darkness was a great read that kept me emotionally involved throughout. Whether I was freaking out about what a jerk someone was, or loving how amazing someone else was, I was constantly feeling. This book was easy to read because it never felt overly descriptive or character driven, it was the perfect balance between the two. I appreciated that the book had an ending even though there is another book in the series. I will most definitely being reading Caged by Damnation, book 2 of the Caged series.

I am SO excited to reveal the awesome cover of Natasha Larry's upcoming novel Unnatural Law (Darwin's Children Book 2)! I think it's safe to say that this book is the one that I am waiting on this Wednesday:)  I hope you all love it as much as I do! So here you go........

Seventeen-year-old Jaycie Lerner’s psycho-kinetic power surge is over, and her astounding powers are under control for the time being – sort of. As she struggles to maintain her humanity in the face of the awesome terror and responsibility of her abilities, she also yearns for the chance at a normal life – and a relationship with Matt Carter, the best friend she had to leave behind. But Matt’s got a few tricks up his sleeve, and he’s not about to give up on his feelings for Jaycie.

As Jaycie and her family grapple with the day-to-day routine of trying to keep their world together, Jaycie’s mother figure, Allison Young, endures a personal crisis of her own. The superhuman blonde possesses the physical equivalent of Jaycie’s awesome psychic power.

So evolved, at ninety-two she still looks twenty. But what good is extended life when everyone else around her is so fragile? With no one to share her unusual life, she’s a uniquely lonely woman yearning for the romantic love she sees all around her. But in a dream she gets her wish – and it quickly turns to a nightmare for everyone else in her life. The memory of a rose is all she can hold onto in the storm of obsession that nearly sweeps her away.

Things quickly turn deadly for the vampires, but the Dey-Vah Guard fairies refuse to acknowledge there’s an imbalance in the nature they protect. As the danger gets ever closer to Jaycie and her family, the race is on to find answers before a secret plot can destroy them

The smell of the ocean shoots through the air and I can feel the change in the room. It's Layne behind me. I look over my shoulder and we are eye to eye. He smiles without opening his mouth and his dimples deepen. My breathing quickens and I feel my skin burn as he comes closer.
