At the constant insistence of my wonderful daughter I finally picked up Ripple. I had to thank her for shoving this book in my face because it really was quite good.

Poor Lexi has no idea how she killed her boyfriend on her sixteenth birthday but she is deteremined to never kill anyone again. Since that horrible night she has shut herself off from everyone. All of her old friends bully her now because they all believe that she had something to do with his death.

I love how a really well written character, paranormal or not can seem like a real person. Lexi's pain felt so real throughout this book. When Cole, her past boyfriend's best friend starts to show an interest in her she wants to stay away, she really does. He finally shows her that not everyone thinks she was the cause of her boyfriend's death.

Then along comes Erik. He knows what she is. He knows how to fix her, and he is pretty darn awesome. He is everything she needs, and even though Cole is everything she wants she knows that Erik is the right choice. Until being with Erik just starts to feel wrong, and she can't get Cole out of her head.

I loved the twist in this book. I was completely blown away and couldn't believe how wrong I had been. The characters are pretty great from damaged Lexi, to her grandma in the sweats sitting in her recliner. Cole is an amazing guy that will have you wondering why your boyfriend isn't quite that sweet. Erik, oh Erik, that's all I have to say about him. Ripple is a quick read and guess what? It's not a series or a trilogy it's a stand alone novel. Ripple isn't like the few other mermaid books I've read (not that I've read many). I really enjoyed the legend behind what she is, and wish that they story had delved just a little deeper into that. Overall a quick enjoyable read!

What can I say about these books that hasn't already been said? Rachel Caine is brilliant, six books into a series and she can still throw in plot twists and turns that keep me guessing every single time! I know when I pick up one of these books that I can't have anything important to do because once I start I'm not going to stop until I'm done!

The characters are perfection every book. I love how Claire gets stronger and stronger, she has really learned how to hold her own. Mrynin, oh my gawd! that vamp, he keeps on surprising me! I loved the addition of Ada the computer type machine that took Mrynin 300 years to build. Of course I'm still loving Shane and Claire together. Towards the end I was freaking out thinking NO!!! you can't leave it here, you just can't!! I'll let you read for yourself to find out if she left it there or not. I'll be picking up book seven just as soon as I can clear a day to read uninterrupted.

When I first finished this book my initial reaction was UGH, this was so not the book for me. However, I am finding that I can't stop thinking about the characters in this book. Their actions have left me thinking about what I would have done differently in the same situation, and why the characters maybe didn't react the way I would have. At first I found the characters to be weak and sometimes stupid, but the more I think about them the more I realize that not everyone can stand up for themselves at any given time. Some people have to grow into their courage.

This book is not for the faint of heart. All four of these teens have been abused in one way or another, and there are a few scenes that are not graphic but still extremely disturbing. The biggest problem I had with Pieces of Us is that I just couldn't connect with any of the characters. They are all very flawed and troubled, but that's not what bothered me. I like it when characters are believable as real people with relate-able problems. Usually I can find at least one thing I like about these troubled people, but in this book I just wasn't feeling it. It's not that I have a problem reading books that don't have a happy ending or books that deal with real life, hard issues. I've read many and loved them. This one just didn't do it for me.

The writing wasn't bad but I found it hard to switch between the characters when they were each written in a different point of view. One character was written in the first person another the second, that made it hard for me to really enjoy, like the flow was constantly interrupted. I would start reading and then have to check back to see which character I was reading about, it became tiresome. As much as I am complaining here I do have to admit that I read this book pretty quickly so there was something about it at least that kept me reading. The ending was a bit disappointing because I didn't feel like there was one.

Since writing this review I've gone out seeking other reviews of this book because hey this is just one girl's opinion. I wanted to know why others liked the same book that I didn't. So I am including a few links to a few positive reviews as well.

Word of warning: if you decide to read Pieces of Us there is a lot of sex (not always consensual), drinking, cursing, and abuse of all types. This is by no means a light read. As a parent I mentioned to my almost 13 year old that she may not be ready for this one, and my almost 16 year old knows that if she picks this one up that I am always available to talk about any of the issues that get brought up.

My Thoughts:

Saving June is funny, heartbreaking, intense, romantic, exasperating, and just plain awesome! There is so much to love about this book:

The Characters:
June is sarcastic in that hilarious snarky way. Her grief feels so real you just want to hug her and tell her everything will be okay, even if you aren't sure that it will be.
Jake is complicated, adorable, and so freakin annoying at times that you just want to kiss him or shake him or both.
Laney, Harper's best friend is one of those girls that are sometimes a little over the top, occasionally a little irritating, but always lovable and above all -- loyal.
The Music:
Jake plays guitar, works in a music store and just generally loves music so there are quite a few great conversations on the road about the music he likes and what certain songs mean to him. I had to download so many of the songs from the play lists in the back of the book.
The Plot:
The plot of Saving June is without a doubt realistic. I loved all of the little stops that lead to adventures for the trio on the way to California, it really made for a great road trip book. With the death of Harper's sister June being the entire reason for the road trip, there are definitely some intense and sad moments, but the way the author throws humor in with the grief makes for a real, honest feeling story. I laughed, I cried and I honestly loved this book!

My Thoughts:

Angelina's Secret is a gripping tale of a girl that desperately needs someone to trust and believe in her. While I was never on the edge of my seat with suspense I was still really enthralled with this story. I was kept guessing through out the entire book on whether or not I believed she was seeing ghosts(you'll have to read this one to find out for yourself). Even though I knew Angelina was about to end up in a mental hospital I still couldn't help feeling how heartbroken Angelina was when she woke up to discover that not only did no one believe her but that they all thought she was crazy.

One thing that had me feeling so badly for Angelina was her mother, she enraged and confused me. She never once thought that Angelina could be telling the truth and it seemed to me at times that she was more upset that Angelina was closer to her "imaginary" friend than she was to her. Talk about self absorbed. I'm not sure if Lisa Rogers intended for Angelina's mother to come across that way or if I just found her to be like that. I would love to know what other readers thought of the mom.

Overall I really enjoyed Angelina's Secret. The romance was minimal which I really liked in this book because that enabled the plot to focus more on Angelina, her friend, and her stay in the mental institution. I haven't read another young adult novel like this one and even though I sometimes felt like the writing was a little stiff I was still able to lose myself in the story. If you find yourself looking for something a little different than the YA Paranormal romance that is really prominent right now then I urge you to find a copy of Angelina's Secret.

My Thoughts:

Damien Locke, future super villain has grand plans to attend Vilmore, the elite boarding school for up and coming super villains. Unfortunately the X that appears on his thumb the night of his sixteenth birthday turns his life upside down. Now he will have to prove himself a villain or a hero.

My absolute favorite part of The Rise of Renegade X has to be main character Damien. His hysterical sarcasm had me laughing out loud more times than I can count. Truly the characters of this book were amazing. From Damien's mad scientist mother to his shape shifting ex girlfriend they just don't get better than this.

I also really enjoyed Chelsea's ability to make me feel like I was a part of each of the scenes as if I were standing in Golden City watching the events take place instead of just reading about them. Never have I had so much fun rooting for the "villain" of a story. I am super stoked that Chelsea is working on book 2.

If you haven't picked up a copy of The Rise of Renegade X I highly recommend that you do, and then get ready for a wild ride and a lot of laughs!

What was the best birthday party you ever had? Why was it the best?

My best birthday party was my 40th surprise party thrown by my husband, about two years ago. I just told you how young I am…lol!!! My husband told me in advance to save that date so we can attend his friend’s daughter’s birthday party at the Jazz Kitchen in Downtown Disney. We got dressed up and I even made a Twilight bracelet, knowing she loved Twilight and headed to the party. When we arrived, he held the door for me to enter. Everybody yelled, “Surprise!” I stood there frozen as I glanced the private room. I was so happy to see my family and friends. I started to tremble from being overjoyed and from having all eyes on me. At this point I still couldn’t move until my mom stood in front of me and hugged me. Tears of happiness flowed as I turned to thank my husband. My children, Joshua and Kaitlin looked just as surprised. I wish you could have seen their faces, they were also in shock. They didn’t know either…lol!!! Each table was decorated with beautiful arrangements of flowers. The cake was specially made to match the theme. He even went to Michael’s to purchase activities for the young ones to do. He even made up games to revolve around me. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect way to celebrate my 40^th. As you all may already know, Michael’s character is based on my husband. He is my guardian angel…hehe!!!

My Thoughts:

Lisa McMann became one of my favorite authors with her Dream Catcher series and I couldn't wait for her to write another novel. So obviously I was very excited to get my hands on Dead To You.

Dead To You starts off with a bang. Ethan is being reunited with his family after years of everyone thinking that he had been killed by his abductors. Things at his new house are awkward and everyone is struggling with Ethan's arrival. The book goes on to talk about day to day activities of the family trying to get to know each other again, going to counseling, Ethan starting school, and meeting up with an old friend.

While I was enjoying reading Dead To You I realized that I wasn't really connecting with it on a personal level. I mean usually with these kinds of books I'm bawling hysterically with not just snot but hiccups too. The writing was great and the plot solid, I definitely recommend this book. Dead To You is a fast read that really kept me interested and looking back I wonder if I didn't get emotionally invested because either a) the book was written from Ethan's point of view and not his mothers or b) if McMann wrote the book like this on purpose. The problem with option b is I can't really explain what I mean by that without revealing some major spoilers. So if you've read Dead To You and want to talk about it let me know I'd love to see what you think.

If you've just read this and are wondering "so did she like it?" My answer is yes I really did I just didn't react to it the way I expected. If you are a fan of Lisa McMann I think you'll be glad you picked up Dead To You.

This weeks question is: Go count the number of unread books sitting on your shelf. How many?

So not to be a party pooper but, I literally have 9 FULL bookshelves in my house with unread books. Most of the shelves are double or triple stacked too. So....I won't be counting them all out but, I will guess that there are at least 250 unread books on those shelves. I'm starting to think that ~~maybe~~ I have a problem!

Seriously-- Between blew me away! If you thought Crossroads was a roller coaster of emotions just wait until you read Between. The romance, lust, betrayal, action and heartache that I loved in Crossroads just got bigger and better in Between.

Mary Ting has really stepped up her writing as well, I felt like everything flowed better and the dialogue felt more real. I loved that there were more details in Between as they really helped me as a reader experience the world and lives of the angels. As dreamy as Micheal is I found myself liking Austin more and more. I love how into Claudia Micheal is, but sometimes it feels a little over the top and Austin just seems a bit more real to me. The supporting characters really shine and I can't wait to find out where Ting will take us in the next book. If you loved or even just liked Crossroads you are going to go crazy over Between!

Favorite Books of 2011

Today's the last day of 2011! I can't believe how fast it has gone by. Tonight my plans to ring in the New Year are simple. I'll be hanging out at home with my favorite people: my husband, two daughters, and my son. We'll stay up late, eat yummy food, be silly, take a little time to be grateful for our wonderful lives, and watch the ball drop together. I hope that whatever plans you have for tonight you have fun and stay safe.

This year I set a goal for myself to read 98 books and on goodreads my challenge says I have read 108. I actually read a few more than that, some of them yet to be published so they weren't on goodreads. I was pretty amazed when I hit my goal back in October. Out of those 108 books some of them made me laugh, cry, tense up with suspense, and some of them outraged me (my family can attest to that last one).

“Did Dad tell you? A new tenant moved into the old pharmacy next door.”“Really?” I ask, not letting on I already know. If I feign ignorance, Mom’ll divulge all the details. “What is it?”“It’s a psychic shop,” Her voice crackles with excitement like a fire that’s just beginning to burn. “The All-Seeing Miss Teak. Isn’t that cute? Miss Teak, Mystic. Ha, I wonder if that’s her real name.”I laugh. “That is funny. Never had a psychic in town before. What’s she like?”“Oh, she’s very friendly. Why don’t you go over and say ‘hi.’ I’m sure she’d like to meet you.”“Okay, I think I will.” I’m incredibly intrigued, because first off, it’s a psychic shop—how weird is that?—and second, its presence made Dad super uncomfortable—also very cool. I waste no time heading next door to check out the scene.As I step cautiously into the new shop, a recording of soft, instrumental music greets me. I can make out chimes and a string instrument I don’t recognize but for some reason reminds me of snake charmers. The smell of incense fills my nostrils, which explains the burning I detected earlier.“Hello?” I call out into the otherwise quiet room.Nobody answers. My Thoughts:

Truthfully, I LOVED this book. In fact it only has a little competition for the number one spot on my most loved books of 2011. At the beginning of each chapter are these quotes that show you just how hard the government is trying to brainwash the people. Here are two... "The most dangerous sicknesses are those that make us believe we are well" -Proverbs 42, The book of Shhh or Ex rememdium salvae. "From the cure, salvation" -Printed on all American currency. Lena starts off as this very timid girl that can't wait to get the "cure" she saw what love did to her mother and she wants no part of it. When I started reading Delirium I thought that the "cure" was just for love between a man and a woman, but no! You have to be careful about the amount of affection you can show your children as well, it's insane. Oliver's writing was believable and scary. The story line builds up and up and up and doesn't stop. Yep, there is a big fat cliff hanger waiting for you at the end, but man is the ride up to it worth it. If you are a fan of dystopia I can't imagine you not loving Delirium.

My Thoughts:

My two favorite parts of Clarity were Clarity herself and the town in which she lives. Clarity's character is the perfect mix of snark, vulnerability, and quirky physic detective. Harrington also did a great job of writing about the town. I wanted to go to the beach so badly after finishing Clarity. The mystery was also great, and kept me guessing until the very end. I'm not usually big on mystery novels, but I was very excited to read this one because of the paranormal aspect. I think I may have to revisit the mystery in general because I really enjoyed it. Paranormal or not I think this book would have had me glued to the pages. I am really looking forward to reading more about Clare in Perception, due out March 1st, 2012.

Happy Holidays - Personal Update

It's that wonderful time of year again. No wait, I'm not being sarcastic. I love December, the only problem is that it goes so fast, and I always forget that I wanted to start getting ready for Christmas earlier in November. If any of you are anything like me (and I really hope there are some of you) than you are still scurrying around trying to get everything ready for THE perfect Christmas too. That being said..... My blog has suffered a bit this month and that makes me sad. Plus, I still have a ton of books to review that I read this past year. So, to ensure that I get as many of them posted as possible I will be doing a series of flash reviews. These are shorter reviews that get right to the heart of the matter, did I or did I not like this book. Luckily for me I read some great books this year. Some of the reviews you will see coming up soon: Delirium, Wither, Awake, Hex Hall, Demon Glass, Nothing, Heavenly, Clarity, and quite a few more. My Thoughts:

Confession time: I wasn't entirely sure it was my best idea to read and review Tangled Tides for a blog tour. I thought maybe it had a 50/50 shot at either being pretty good or pretty bad, but I was intrigued by that cover. I can't say I LOVE the cover but there is something about it that always makes me do a double take. I'm so, so, so glad that I gave Tangled Tides a chance because not only was it not bad, it was fantastic!

There were a few times where the romance feels a bit intense and a little over the top, but I have to admit I usually like that. I loved when the couple even made fun of their overly romantic dialogue at one point. There are quite a few twists and turns in the plot that I figured out ahead of time and quite a few that I didn't. The writing was very easy to read and flowed beautifully. The characters were as believable as paranormal characters can be, and I absolutely adored all of the side characters. I was so into Yara's life that I ended up dreaming about being a mermaid the night I finished the book. I loved the overall feel of hope and love can conquer all feelings that I had while reading this book.

I am definitely recommending this book to anyone that loves smiling, laughing and crying while they read, and to lovers of paranormal romance, mermaids, hot mermen, sweet mermen, and anyone who wanted to or still wants to be Ariel. Curl up, get cozy and prepare to have some fun!

Stephanie Perkins has done it again! I don't know how Perkins writes in such a way that I swear I feel whatever her character is feeling (as silly as it sounds). Lola feels breathless and I can't seem to breathe. Her heart is racing and I feel like mine is too (even though it wasn't really). More than Anna, Lola and the Boy Next Door have captured my heart.

The characters in this book are simply amazing. From Lola with her costumes, wigs, and eyelashes everyday to Max and his bad-boy tattooed self, all the way to her wonderfully amazing dads. To top off a great cast of characters we have Cricket, possibly my favorite book boy ever! Oh wow! He is just want I would want in a boy (if I were 16 again and not married!) Sweet, thoughtful, respectful, and of course super easy on the eyes,.

The pace of this book was perfect. I couldn't put the book down, and I don't think there was one moment that my thoughts strayed from the story. OK, yes, I realize that I am gushing but really.... I LOVED THIS BOOK!

There is one scene where Anna mentions (yes! Anna and St. Claire are in this book) how it is so much easier to write a movie review for a movie that she doesn't like than it is to write one for a movie you love. I find this to be very true. When I love a book I have a hard time articulating what it was that made me love it, I just love it! However, when I don't like a book I have no trouble picking every apart every little thing that I didn't like. All this just to say "I LOVE THIS BOOK!" End gush.

Obviously I highly recommend this book!

My Thoughts:

I have recently had the immense pleasure of reading not one, but two books by Tawny Stokes, and I can tell you I will be waiting for more. Her writing is edgy and intense, fast paced and fun. I love how Stokes is able to write a book that can be so dark one page, and have me chuckling the next. Static is a book like no other that I have read before, and I have to say it was pretty frickin awesome.

Salem starts off as this star-struck girl that just wants to meet the lead singer of her favorite band and sleep with him. Really? I mean who makes that their life's goal? I have never understood how people can get so totally obsessed with "stars. Anyway... moving on from that mini rant. Once Salem meets her obsession she realizes that he isn't all she thought he would be and she finds her self in a situation that she can't explain. Later on in the book Stokes provides a reason for Salem's obsessive behavior and all is happy in my mind again. Gritty and suspenseful Static might just be your next up to late reading to function the next day book. I know I am adding Tawny Stokes to my must read this author's books list.

Word of Warning: It is my opinion that Static is probably best for mature young adult readers.

Cover Envy

They say don’t judge a book by its cover, but let’s face it, we all do it. I’m as guilty of this as the next person, but when my novel Boyfriend From Hell hit the bookstore shelves in September, I became guilty of something else—cover envy. That twinge of jealousy you get when you see an awesome book cover and wish that cover was on your book.

It’s not that I didn’t like the original cover for Boyfriend From Hell, I did like it. But when I wrote the book I envisioned a more beautiful cover. Covers like Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick or Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. I am a fan of pretty things.
The reviews for Boyfriend From Hell were good. But some time in mid-October sales began to slump. It was then I convinced my publisher I needed a new look for both Boyfriend From Hell and Earth Angel. Enter Adara Rosalie, an amazing artist with a mastery of Photoshop. The first thing that struck me when I looked at Adara’s portfolio was how beautiful her work was.
I contacted Adara (also known as Jayde), and was lucky enough to catch her between commissions. She liked what the books were about and went to work. A month after she began, and twenty or so prototypes in, Adara presented me the cover for Earth Angel. “Stop,” I said. “This is it. You don’t need to go any further.” I sent the cover off to my publisher who was elated. A few days later she presented me with the Boyfriend From Hell cover. And guess what happened? I was cured of my cover envy. Aren’t they beautiful?

My Thoughts on Earth Angel

If you haven't noticed, I am a HUGE fan of E.Van Lowe's Falling Angels Saga! HUGE! Lowe has done an incredible job of writing the characters in this book. Megan, the main character, starts out as this incredibly self absorbed teenage girl that continues to grow into an amazing kick-ass, selfless heroine. Megan's mom, Suze, both impresses me and infuriates me all in the same book. Guy is perfect and then, well... he isn't. That's what I love about these characters, they are wonderfully and perfectly flawed. Boyfriend from Hell and Earth Angel are both quick, fun reads packed with romance, action and humor. This is definitely a book you will want to start early because you won't want to put it down once you start. I do have one giant complaint Mr. Lowe, I can't believe you left us hanging the way you did at the end of Earth Angel!!!! If you haven't read the Falling Angels Saga you are seriously missing out. I can't recommend these books enough.

DEMON WHISPERER EXCERPT
Chapter 1
The skin on Alan Bigby’s pock-marked face rippled as if something was alive underneath it. Something big and bad and nasty wanted out to rip something apart. Unnatural black veins popped out on his forehead and temples as he bucked and writhed against the iron shackles chaining him to the chair. The fat rolls of his enormous ass hung over the sides and jiggled with each spasm. If it had been under different circumstance I would’ve laughed at that.
“I’m going to rip out your innards, Butcher, and eat them raw,” he spat at me.
Then he really did spit. Viscous green phlegm spewed from between his thin cracked lips and landed on the toe of my black Doc Marten. Disgusted, I shook it off, and then dug into the beat-up, brown leather bag I had slung over my shoulder and across my chest for the holy water. It was time to get busy. No more messing around. I had to exorcise this guy and be done with it. The money from this one would pay the rent for the condo my dad and I had. Groceries too for a few months.
“Not today, you’re not,” I said as I unscrewed the sliver cap on the bottle of holy water.
I glanced over at Eleanor Bigby standing in the corner wide-eyed, wringing her hands as she watched in horror as her husband twisted and pulled at the restraints I had put on him. He was bound to a metal chair in the middle of a pentagram that I’d inscribed in blessed chalk on the blond hardwood floor of their big expensive house overlooking the Hollywood Hills. I could see the white sign out the front bay windows.
She probably had no idea that when she called the Butchers to exorcize the demon possessing her husband that it would look like this. She probably thought watching her fat husband crab-walk across the ceiling of their bedroom was disturbing enough.
“Dude, is he going to hurt himself?”
I glanced over my shoulder at the guy holding the camera trained on Alan Bigby. He had shaggy blond hair and a freshly clipped soul patch that I nearly envied. Except I didn’t like him much. He was a dick with too much time and money on his hands.
“For the last time, dude, shut up. I’m the only one supposed to be talking,” I answered, forgetting that the exorcism was being televised.
Trey Summers was an up-and-coming film maker, touted to be the next Tarantino, but I thought he was a hack. He’d directed one lousy music video for some useless pop star and voila he was an insta-star. I thought he was a talentless hack with delusions of grandeur and of getting a lot of ass. Although he did appear to be getting quite a bit by the looks of the two chicks he’d come to the house with.
The red-head smiled at me around the little white straw she had in her mouth. She was enjoying that drink just a bit too much.
I didn’t smile back. It kind of made my stomach churn that she’d come to an exorcism for a good time. The fact that the house was full of people, watching, waiting, while drinking and enjoying finger food passed out by waiters in tuxes, made me down right nauseous. Why in hell did I hang out with these people? Why did I ever agree to this being put on TV? Ten thousand, that was why.
Seven in my pocket, well me and my dad’s pockets, and three to the International Order of Exorcists. Because they were going to be some pissed that I agreed to the recording. It was against the order’s mandates to involve the media in what we did. The world knew we, meaning exorcists, existed but it was in keeping the peace to keep our business on the down low. But since I’d been crowned the exorcist to the stars, I figured it was good publicity for everyone involved. I was hoping the three grand would appease the more militant members of the I.O. into letting me off with a warning.
I returned my attention to Alan, who was still struggling against his restraints and mumbling under his breath. He was speaking Latin. I recognized the dialect but not the particular words. As far as I knew, it was probably a bunch of gibberish. A bunch of scary sounding Latin words strung together nonsensically to sound menacing and ominous. It was par for the course. Every exorcism was the same. Demons were so predictable.
I took off my black wool cap, shoved it into my bag, and then ran a hand through my short mess of brown hair. I was starting to sweat a little. It wasn’t the exorcism that had me sweating it was the scrutiny from the masses of people watching. I had to be careful with this one. More cautious than I usually was in situations like these.
I took a step toward the pentagram, making the sign of the cross with the bottle of holy water. It splattered everywhere. Drops landed on Alan Bigby. Smoke curled up from blackened spots on the back of his hands, and two pinpoints on his cheek. I winced as the demon inside writhed from the pain. Holy water was like acid to them.
“Dues, et Pater Domini nostril jesu Christi…”
I started the exorcism, incanting the Rituale Romanum, in the original Latin. I’d done the ritual so many times before it was like reciting Jingle Bells at Christmas time. Cake, man. Cake. Although this time, like all the other times, I changed a few words. The last thing I wanted to do was send the demon back to hell. It just had to look like I did.
If I did accidentally send him back, Dan would be so pissed at me. And I really didn’t want him mad. He was a bastard when he was angry. I knew that well. I still had the scar on my chin from his last temper tantrum.
As I continued to say the verse, I recapped the holy water and slid it back into my bag. I figured I’d inflicted enough pain for the crowd’s enjoyment. I didn’t want to damage Alan Bigby anymore than he already had been. His wrists looked pretty raw from rubbing against the iron handcuffs. But he’d heal. Besides, Alan Bigby was a dick. He screwed around on his wife and he bilked two of his business partners for millions. I’d done my research on the guy. My marks always had certain traits—they were rich, influential and total assholes. People who had it coming to them in all kinds of ways.
Karma was definitely a bitch.
Exorcisms were never all that easy on the possessed. Some demons really messed around with their hosts. Inflicting all kinds of horrors on their bodies and minds. I’d seen one demon tear the fingernails off an eight year old girl just for fun. That image still made my gut roil. Luckily, Dan was cool. He’d never do that. Deep down he was a decent shit for a demon. Besides, that was part of our deal. No permanent physical or emotional damage.
For show, I thrust my hand out toward Alan and said the words even louder, letting the pitch of my voice rise higher and higher over the din of the murmuring crowd. They were leaning in, eager for more. I glanced around me and took in all the awestruck faces. They were mesmerized, enchanted by the scene. By my power.
Man, did I have an enormous ego. My dad was right. It was going to get me into trouble one of these days. Hopefully not today.
As I neared the end of the ritual, Alan twitched and convulsed, his eyes rolling back in his sockets. That got a gasp or two from the crowd. The demon was really putting on a show now. Undulating like rippling water beneath Alan’s pale skin. At one point, it looked like it he was going to punch a hole through Alan’s midsection. Mrs. Bigby cried out, putting a shaky hand to her mouth. I hated doing this to her, she was a decent lady, she just managed to marry a dickwad, but hell, a guy had to make a living.
“Qui cum Patre et eodem spiritu sancto vivit et eregnat Deus…”
I could feel Trey pressing in behind me with his camera, like a media happy vulture. I wanted to whip around and knock the guy once or twice in the face. He had no manners. And he had no understanding about personal space. Because he was definitely invading mine.
But I didn’t need to do anything, because the demon inside Alan took that moment to focus on Trey.
“Trey Summers, you lecherous son-of-a-bitch.”
It was funny hearing those words with Alan’s voice. Especially since the two men were business partners. Alan was funding Trey’s first movie. Which after tonight, I imagined was going to be in the dumper. I mean, who would want their exorcism broadcasted to millions on YouTube. Alan really wasn’t looking his best right now. No one looked good with a demon inside them.
I glanced behind me and saw Trey’s face pale. I had to bite down on my tongue to stifle the laugh that wanted to burst out. Not that I enjoyed wallowing in other people’s misery, it’s just that his misery was fair game.
“Have I ever told you how much of a loser I think you are, Trey? You suck.”
Trey looked around, his cheeks reddening. “That’s just the demon talking, right?” He looked at me, pleading in his gaze. “Right?”
I let him suffer for a few more moments while I finished the incantation. “Amen.” I signed the cross in the air.
Alan’s body made one more desperate back breaking spasm, and then slumped down into the chair, his head hanging slack, his mouth open, drool dribbling down his double chins.
“Yeah, Trey, it was the demon talking.” I could hear his sigh of relief. I crossed the lines of the pentagram to unlock Alan’s wrists. “But guess where he gets his material from.” I tapped my finger against Alan’s forehead.
That roused Alan from his stupor and he blinked up at me, spittle coating his chin. Wide-eyed, he looked around, taking in the spectacle that was his exorcism. He would’ve had no idea what was going on. The last thing he likely remembered was whatever he’d been doing twenty four hours ago before he’d become possessed. Everything else would be a blank. Although some demons allowed their hosts to be aware of what was going on. It was the biggest mindfuck of all to watch yourself do horrible unimaginable things and be unable to stop.
I knew Dan kept his hosts dumb. It was also part of our bargain.
I unlocked the cuffs and helped Alan to his feet. He stared at me, his dark bushy eyebrows knit together in confusion. “Who the hell are you?”
“Caden Butcher, sir.”
“The exorcist?”
I nodded.
“What the hell are you doing here?”
“Saving your soul, sir.”
Mrs. Bigby took that moment to rush to her husband’s aid. She wrapped her arms around him and kissed his doughy cheek. “Oh Alan, I was so scared.”
He didn’t immediately respond to his wife, but continued to gape around the room as more people started to crush in on him, wanting to welcome him back, or take pictures. I saw flashes out of the corner of my eye.
“Who are these people?” Alan sputtered. “Someone tell me what the hell is happening here?”
I put my hand on his big shoulder, preparing him for my big speech. I one I’d practiced like a hundred times before in front of a mirror. Doing exorcisms in Hollywood was very much like acting. “Alan Bigby, you were possessed by a level one demon and I performed an exorcism on you to banish the demon back to hell.”
He looked to his wife for confirmation. She nodded vigorously, as she continued to cling to him and kiss his cheeks. “I was so scared, Alan. You were actually crawling up the walls in the bedroom.”
He looked back at me. “You’re serious?”
“Completely.”
Shaking his head, his gaze settled on Trey who was still holding the camera on his shoulder. His face darkened. “Are you taping this?”
Trey licked his lips nervously. “Ah, yeah, I am, Alan, but it’ll be really-,”
Alan shrugged off his wife’s hands and rushed toward Trey. “Turn that fucking thing off you asshole!”
Smiling, I got the hell out of the way. Good thing I got my fee upfront. There was no way in hell Alan Bigby, up-and-coming producer, was going to pay me for making him look like an ass on TV.
