2012 Favorite Reads

I can't believe 2012 is almost over. It's been a crazy year full of ups and downs all of which I'm grateful for. I found some new favorite books, songs, and bands. Made some new friends and reconnected with some old  ones. I discovered Earl Grey Lattes and spent way too much money at Starbucks. I shed more than forty pounds and learned to knit hats. I watched way too much tv, but who am I to resist Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Once Upon A Time, How I Met Your Mother and way too many more to name. I also found myself enjoying more genres of books other than Young Adult and have made a decision regarding the blog (more on that in a later post). I'm looking forward to see what 2013 has in store for me. I hope you have a year full of growth, happiness, health and many amazing moments.

Now on to my favorite books of 2012 in no particular order. (Read in 2012 not necessarily published in 2012)

Short and Sweet: Welcome, Caller, This Is Chloe

Welcome, Caller, This Is Chloe
Author: Shelley Coriell
Genre: YA Contemporary
Release Date: May 1, 2012
Publisher: Amulet Books
Source: NetGalley

Summary from Goodreads:

Big-hearted Chloe Camden is the queen of her universe until her best friend shreds her reputation and her school counselor axes her junior independent study project. Chloe is forced to take on a meaningful project in order to pass, and so she joins her school’s struggling radio station, where the other students don’t find her too queenly. Ostracized by her former BFs and struggling with her beloved Grams’s mental deterioration, lonely Chloe ends up hosting a call-in show that gets the station much-needed publicity and, in the end, trouble. She also befriends radio techie and loner Duncan Moore, a quiet soul with a romantic heart. On and off the air, Chloe faces her loneliness and helps others find the fun and joy in everyday life. Readers will fall in love with Chloe as she falls in love with the radio station and the misfits who call it home.

My Short and Sweet Thoughts:

WCTIC is a fun, fast read. Your life won't be forever changed but you will smile and have a generally good time spending a few hours with Chloe and the misfits. My favorite part of WCTIC are the characters. Even though Chloe is going through a rough time she stays pretty positive through out the book and even though she makes a few mistakes along the way she really is a good person. Duncan Moore is a bit of a mystery at first but I liked him through out the book as well. If you have had reservations about this book because of the corny cover don't. It is well worth the time you will invest to read it.

Cover Reveal: Lennon's Jinx by Chris Myers

Title: Lennon’s Jinx
Author: Chris Myers
Expected release date: January 15, 2013
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age Group: New Adult
Cover designer: Chris Myers; Shutterstock photo by Coka
Cover reveal organized by: AToMR Tours

Book Description:
Sometimes, we don’t get to choose who we fall for.

Lennon spends most of his time raising his little sister Currie while trying to skate through
his senior year of high school. He prefers groupies with no-strings attached but finds himself strangely attracted to Jinx, the straight-A student in his choir. Lennon’s curiosity overrules his good sense as he tries to peel away the layers to discover the reason for Jinx’s skittishness.

Jinx conceals the black truth about herself from her friends. She won’t admit to them that she screwed up big time, losing her first love and what she once held most precious.

When Lennon’s band holds auditions to replace their keyboard player, Jinx comes to tryout and almost leaves after seeing Lennon. Despite the fact she despises him, she joins the band to nurture her love of music that will hopefully ease the guilt gnawing away at her.

Like the rest of his band mates, Jinx soon witnesses Lennon battling his infamous father for the custody of Currie. While confronting his pent-up anger at his dad, Lennon exposes vulnerabilities he had no intention of letting any girl ever see, especially Jinx. Their reckless pasts may bring them together or further complicate their already messy lives.

About the author:
Chris Myers suffers from an overactive imagination. In second grade, Sister Bernice produced Chris's first play about pumpkins mauling and eating children. Apparently, the nuns didn’t catch the underlying meaning. This instantly raised Chris to stardom amongst her peers for the several days off from schoolwork while in production. She spent her high school years writing torch songs for fantasy guys then moved onto writing thrillers and young adult. Chris lives in Colorado with her daughter, her better half, and BeBe, a rambunctious Bichon.

Chris literally has very few photos of herself, even though photography put her through college.
Here she is with her sisters and daughter. Chris is the one with the vino.

Chris started out as an art major, then moved to bio-chem, hoping to play Victor Frankenstein as a genetic engineer or messing with people's minds as a psychiatrist. Just as she was about to graduate, she decided being broke for another four to ten years wouldn't work out for her adventurous spirt and traveling. She ended up with an electrical engineering degree then a masters. As it turns out, she should've finished her first novel twenty-five years ago and stuck in the make-believe world where she is happiest.

Blog Tour: Blood Twist Review and Excerpt

Blood Twist (Erris Coven book 2)
Author: Bonnie Erina Wheeler
Released: August 25, 2012
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance
Publisher: Kindle Direct Publishing
Source: SupaGurl Tours

From Bonnie Erina Wheeler, the author who brought you Fate Fixed, comes the second installment in the Erris Coven Series, Blood Twist.

Find out what happens to the Erris Coven when Lexie's BFF Liz comes to town.

Braden Murphy knew he was going to die. There was a twist to his family secret – one that was forced upon him from the time he was a child. For years he envisioned his final days and tried to be strong enough to leave his family. Now that it was time, he was ready to make good on a deadly promise. Except for one unexpected glitch, a raven haired beauty insisted on joining him.

Liz Sanders thought her best friend’s stepfamily was weird, but she never would have guessed they were werewolves. Now Liz must travel with a secretive half-vampire in search of a lycanthropy cure. Landing in a nest full of blood thirsty vampires wasn’t on the agenda, but neither was falling in love.

Braden is tempting, but Liz’s feelings for him are complicated. She wishes he would open up about his past and give her a reason to trust him.

Just when Liz thinks she can let her guard down, she’s forced to confront the evil that has been stalking Braden’s past for years. Death is here and ready to destroy everything they've fought to save.

Liz wasn’t averse to flying, but waking up at the butt crack of dawn wasn’t her favorite thing either. She barely climbed out of bed when Braden knocked lightly on the front door. Fortunately, she had packed the evening before, so when he asked if she was ready to leave, she just yawned and followed him out to his truck.
At the airport, the lines were long and she just wanted to get situated on the plane. Thinking longingly of coffee, she pushed her legs to keep up with the damphyr’s quicker stride. After collecting their tickets and watching her squirm through security, Braden led Liz through the airport’s terminal at a break neck pace. As he moved with purpose, she couldn’t help but notice the tension behind his illuminating blue eyes.
Maybe he’s uptight about the time.
When they arrived at their boarding gate, she was surprised to see the plane was destined for Vancouver, Canada and not Ireland like she had expected. She gave him a questioning glance, but he just proceeded to hand over their boarding passes to the agent who was calling their row to be seated.
Riding in first class was a novel experience. When she mentioned paying for her own airfare the night before, Braden wouldn’t hear of it. She expected to be sitting in the economy section where her knees bumped the seat in front of her, but there was plenty of room to stretch out. Even as tall as Braden was, the damphyr had leg room.
Her joy was complete when the perky flight attendant took her breakfast order and brought her coffee.  She didn’t appreciate the goo-goo eyes the bleach blonde was bestowing on Braden, but the coffee was good and made a peaceful bribe.
Wonderful, delicious, hot coffee…
Once in the air, Liz began fidgeting with a nervous excitement. She liked her window seat, but was more interested in what was going on around her. Unsure if it was due to the caffeine she slurped down or the bisque colored rubber eggs, she needed entertainment.
Liz turned to face Braden. He was sitting upright and staring straight ahead with a pensive expression.
“Was there a reason you told your family we were traveling to Ireland instead of Canada?” she blurted.  Braden didn’t flinch. “You could have at least mentioned it to me. What if I had a strong hatred against Canadians or was banned from entering the country or something?”
“You could have refused to get on the plane,” he answered simply.
“So, is being cryptic your vampire power or something?”
Braden cocked his head to meet Liz’s gaze. “Do you have to talk so loudly? We aren’t the only passengers on this plane.”
Liz edged her face closer to his. “I really don’t think anyone cares what we are talking about.”
She sat back and studied him, “You know – you aren’t exactly what I expected of a vampire.” She caught his eyebrow go up. “Excuse me, damphyr.  You’re a bit on the preppy side.”
Leaning his head back against his seat, he sighed. “I’m sorry to disappoint.”
Liz bit on her lip. Braden wasn’t a disappointment. He was actually…cute. As far as the male species went, he had every physical feature a girl could desire and then some. He was over six feet tall, muscular, and had a handsome face. But more than that, Braden had integrity. She could see it in the way he spoke to others. Not just to his family, but to the airport personnel and to her. It wasn’t a quality she often found in other people. Especially in guys who were naturally big and strong. Somehow, he skipped the big jock ego trip. It was refreshing.
Plus he smells amazing.
She didn’t know if he had discovered the world’s best cologne or if it was natural, but she couldn’t help but notice he smelled really good. Kind of woodsy, kind of like peppermint. Whatever it was, it mixed with his chemistry and she found it alluring.
The flight attendant swooped over him, her ample chest bouncing unnecessarily close to his face as she pretended to adjust his headrest. Liz noticed Braden stiffen as his mouth tightened into a straight line. Instead of gawking, he quickly averted his eyes to Liz’s. His face appeared stripped down, almost vulnerable.
He’s hungry.
Maybe Braden was more of a vampire than she gave him credit for.
After the woman moved on to her next victim, a man in a stylish grey suit in front of them, Braden visibly relaxed.
Liz had learned the night she met him that the coven didn’t drink from humans, only animals. Watching the serious damphyr beside her, she realized for the first time it was a choice.
Liz leaned back over, this time keeping her voice a hushed whisper. “You don’t.”
“Don’t what?” he asked.
“You don’t disappoint,” she said honestly. “You’re just different than I expected.”
He smiled, causing her heartbeat to hasten. “What did you expect?”
She didn’t know whether to look in his eyes or at his perfect mouth. “I’m not sure,” she admitted. “I guess someone dark and dangerous.”
Braden’s hand snaked out and caught her wrist. Surprised with how quick he moved, she sat frozen and just watched as he trailed his fingers along the vulnerable flesh of her inner arm. His fingers left a wonderful warming sensation trickling deep into her skin.
“I can be dark and dangerous sometimes,” he whispered, his intense blue eyes holding her in place. The slight huskiness of his voice made her breath catch, but she gently pulled herself free from his hold.
Liz swallowed; completely stunned by the physical reaction she had to his touch. He wasn’t the first attractive guy she had ever been around, but he was the first to make her melt with a single stroke of her skin.
For a moment, she thought he would kiss her. What shocked her more was that she would have let him.
What was it about Irish guys? The only guy she allowed herself to fantasize about was Danny O’Donoghue, the lead singer from The Script. But he was unreachable and safe to have a thing for from a distance. Braden was right beside her and leaving her acutely aware of his presence.
Sitting back in her seat, Liz willed her heart rate to slow down. The damphyr was full of surprises.

My Thoughts:

While waiting for Wheeler's second Erris Coven novel wasn't easy, I'm really glad I did. I loved Liz in Fate Fixed and couldn't wait to get to know her better. That her love interest is the sexy angst filled Braden made me even more anxious to read Blood Twist.

I love that Liz is a strong female character, I really do! But.... She refuses to back down, even when she really should. Uhm. Hello Liz? Is anybody home? You have the chance to escape a coven full of nasty vampires and you choose to stay? Have you lost your ever lovin mind? Really Liz, really! I love it when a girl has lady balls but come gotta use your brains

I loved learning more about Braden and the secret that he has been carrying around for so long. His loyalty to his family really makes you want everything to turn out just right for him. Meeting his brother Riley was amazing and I can't wait for more of him in the next book (hopefully).

While usually I find Bonnie's writing to flow really well occasionally I found myself rereading a sentence or two thinking "huh"? I noticed it seems to happen when she is trying to explain the deep love that fated partners share. I get that she wants us to understand how intense their connection is but sometimes it comes across cheesy or even confusing.

Where I was confused occasionally during the lovey dovey stuff I was extremely impressed with the action in Blood Twist. Not only was it fun to read but there was quite a bit of it and I really got into those scenes.

Overall I definitely recommend The Erris Coven Series, especially if you love vampires, romance, and some kick ass fight scenes.

Blog Tour: Mia's Heart (The Paradise Diaries #2) by Courtney Cole and Giveaway!

Mia's Heart
Author: Courtney Cole
Release Date: November 13, 2012
Genre: YA Contemporary
Published By: Lakehouse Press
Source: Kismet Book Tours

My name is Mia Giannis.
I am seventeen years old.
I live in Valese, Caberra.

This has become my mantra and my lifeline, having recently lost my memory due to a scary natural disaster.
Yeah.  I have amnesia.  Messed up, right?

You don't know the half of it.

Not remembering anything has turned my world upside down. My parents try their hardest to “remind” me of who I was, but it doesn't feel right. Or, if what they're saying is true and that really was me, I'm not sure I like that person very much.

And then there’s my love life.  Apparently, Gavin Ariastasis is my oldest and best friend in the world. Also, apparently, we’ve never dated.  But now, noticing him for what feels like the first time, he’s making my heart do somersaults.  He knows me inside and out—the real me.  Plus, he’s sexy and charming as hell.  Sounds perfect, right?

But then... there’s the new guy. Quinn McKeyen – tall, gorgeous and deliciously American.  His mischievous grin and slow Midwestern drawl turn my insides to mush in two seconds flat making me question who I really am and what I really want.

Seriously. What am I supposed to do with all that?!  I feel torn between them, but I barely even know who I am, let alone what I want.
I just hope my indecisive heart will clue me in.  And sooner rather than later…before I lose what little of my mind that I have left.

My Thoughts:

I have been anxiously awaiting the return of Mia, Gavin, Quinn, Reece and Dante. Dante's Girl was such a sweet, fun read and I couldn't wait to find out if Mia was going to get her happily ever after as well.

Poor Mia! Really, I can't imagine waking up and not knowing anyone, not even yourself. How terrifying not to know anything about who you are, how you feel about someone, what you like or hate! If that's not enough, now she has the added stress of falling for a gorgeous guy. Wait...make that two gorgeous guys. She now has to decide which boy she's in love with and which one is just a friend. The stunning boy she's known all her life but can't remember or the rugged cowboy that makes her heart race?

Luckily her best friends Reece and Dante come back ready to help Mia get her memories back and to help clean and rebuild the beautiful city of Caberra. There is a lot to love about this novel but one of my favorite parts was how gentle Reece was with Mia. She is always there for her and selflessly helps her through every scary, confusing moment. Even though Mia can't remember Reece she can see why Reece was her best friend.

I really enjoyed the way Cole had Mia grow without the edge of all of the resentment she had held onto with her mother. It was interesting to see her become basically who she had been without all that anger. As for the boys I definitely had my favorite picked out well before Mia did.

Mia's Heart is a sweet novel that [aired up with a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter's night just might have the ability to make your teeth ache (in a good way). I'm really curious to see what and who the next book has in store for us.

Released Today! From Ashes By Molly McAdams (New Adult)

When Cassidy Jameson’s best friend Tyler took her to Texas with him when he left for college, she was expecting his cousin, their new roommate, to be a Stetson-wearing cowboy since his family owned a ranch; not this incredibly gorgeous guy with a husky Southern drawl that seemed to make the world stop whenever she looked at him. Because of her past, she’s only ever trusted two men in her life, Tyler and her dad whom passed away when she was six. But there’s something about Gage that draws her to him in a way she can’t explain, only problem? He’s always telling Tyler that he doesn’t want Cassidy living there and sees her as nothing more than his little sister.
Gage Carson was excited his cousin Tyler was coming to live with, and go to college with him. When he’d called to ask if he could bring his friend Cassi with him, Gage didn’t care. Gage had heard about this mysterious friend since they were kids and felt like he already knew her. Nothing would prepare him for watching her jump out of Ty’s Jeep though. Not only was Cassi the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen, but there was something about her that within seconds of meeting her, made Gage want to protect her, and make her his. Too bad Tyler made it a point to remind Gage on a daily basis that he was dating her and she was completely off limits.

For a year and a half, Gage and Cassidy dance around their feelings for each other as Tyler continues to keep them apart; until one day Tyler unknowingly pushes her right into Gage’s arms. With Tyler unable to keep lying to them, they finally start a relationship both have been craving since their first meeting. But when an accident and disaster sends her back to Tyler and California, will Cassidy be able to come face to face with the demons from her past to live a life she and Gage deserve; or will the fact that she once again ran to Tyler be the final push that ends Cassidy and Gage for good?

My Thoughts:
Why is it that so many of us intelligent, strong, girls fall for the bad boy. The jerk that would actually leave you in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night just because you don't feel like getting down and dirty. Girls, a little advice for you. That guy is NOT worth the gum stuck to the bottom of your shoe. OK, I feel better now that I got that off of my chest. Luckily Nicole is able to find out exactly what her boyfriend is like because of her "special" situation. In fact Nicole learns a lot about her so called friends and herself while she's "lost".

Pearl does a great job of writing a novel that's not just angst and romance. I loved that she was able to take a real life situation give it a paranormal spin and throw in enough mystery to keep you guessing for a while. I also really enjoyed how she doled out the characters pasts slowly and at just the right time. Here you are reading the story thinking you've figured out the characters and BAM you learn something that makes you feel a bit differently than you did before.

Betwixt is the kind of book that will make you think, make you smile, make you cry, and make you realize that when you're given a second chance, you better grab it and make it count!
