Author Biography:

Summer Lane is the author of the YA/NA Dystopian Romance, State
of Emergency. She is a freelance writer, editor and lover of all things
feline. Summer is also the author of Snappy Social Networking: How
to Dominate the Blogosphere & Everything in Between. In her spare
time, Summer is the creator of the online magazine/blog, Writing
Belle, in addition to being a frequent contributor at NA Alley, a website
dedicated to all things New Adult.

Summer began writing when she was 13 years old, due to the fact that
the long afternoons after school were somewhat boring, and writing
stories seemed to make the time pass a little quicker. Since then she
has written many books about jungle cats, secret agents, princesses and
spaceships. She is also a non-fiction writer, but her debut novel, State

A Few Questions I Had For Summer Or What Some Might Call An Interview              

1. So my first question is probably really obvious but I feel the need to ask

anyway... Are you a doomsday prepper? And If you aren't, are you thinking

about becoming one now that you've written a book about surviving when

disaster strikes?

I’ve always liked to be prepared for an emergency. All throughout High

School I would keep an emergency Go-Bag under my bed stocked with spare

clothes, medications and a few sentimental things I didn’t want to lose if we

were invaded by Russia or something…(not that I had a wild imagination or anything) I’m not a doomsday prepper, but I have always wondered what

would happen if some big emergency came up tomorrow. How would I cope?

I am a firm believer in being prepared for any emergency (I bought my dad

portable camping gear and waterproof matches for Christmas. Because yes, I am that girl.), so I just took that premise and came up with a story about a girl who has grown up with a dad who is a doomsday prepper.

2. I'm so glad to see that main character Cassidy has a sarcastic voice. Whatmade you decide to add that type of humor to a book about surviving theend of the world?

I have read a lot of books set in a post-apocalyptic environment, and I know

that that kind of novel can be depressing (doom, gloom, destruction..etc), so

I wanted my main character to have a little spunk. Sure, the modern world is collapsing, but at least Cassidy can find something to laugh about! Laughing is the best way to deal with something scary – both fictionally and in real life. I really believe that, and so does Cassidy. J

3. Handsome soldiers.... yum. Oh sorry, got distracted there for a minute

thinking of Chris Hemsworth in Red Dawn (oh MY) ok back to business.

What made you decide to write State of Emergency as a New Adult book

instead of a Young Adult book?

Ha! I loved that movie!! * swoons * My main characters are way past High

School. Chris Young, Cassidy’s love interest, is twenty-eight years old. Cassidy is nineteen, almost twenty. They’re both adults, and they deal with themes that fall into the NA ball field: Living without parents, falling in love seriously for the first time, even seeing people die. My book is also suitable for YA readers, though. I wanted to write a book that my younger brother could enjoy as much as my friends who are going to college.

4. Do you find that listening to music helps you when writing or does it

become a distraction? If you do listen to music is there a playlist to go

along with State of Emergency?

I love music! I would positively lost without it. I can write in complete

silence or in the middle of Starbucks, but my favorite environment is in

my office with a movie score playing in the background. Songs with words

are somewhat distracting for me when I’m writing (although I make an

exception for this when it comes to Ed Sheeran!). If I had a playlist for State of Emergency it would be a compilation of the soundtracks on my iPod. Think Red Dawn by Ramin Djawadi.

5. I know State of Emergency has just released but have you started working on another novel? If so is it also New Adult? (I love New Adult by the way)

Yes! I’m currently working on the sequel to State of Emergency. I also have a few other novels in the works, all of which will be New Adult, too. I love the story opportunities that the New Adult category gives me as a writer. It opens up so many new avenues for characters.

Etta plopped back onto her bed and stared at the ceiling for a few moments. I wished I could hear her thoughts. Her father had just admitted to being a murderer for all practical purposes, though that was not how I viewed him. I truly believed John only tried to save the village, but his fervour and some help from a desperate Alastor, turned what should have been a heroic act into a bloodbath. Many men have unknowingly fallen from grace in the name of the greater good. Now, hopefully Etta would see that her father was just the victim of blurred lines between good and evil.
“What are you thinking?” I asked as I lay down next to her on the bed.
“Can a person still go to Heaven even if they've killed someone?”
“Well, I'm not in the business of getting people to Heaven, Etta. That's the last place I want them to go,” I reluctantly replied.
“Even if it were me?” Etta stared hard at me with watery eyes, looking right into my blackened soul. I never gave much thought to where her soul would go, except to stop her from mistakenly giving it to me.
“That is a choice for you to make. I can't force you to choose a side. I can only put the temptations in front of you.”
“You didn't answer my question.”
“What do you want me to say? I want to see you burn in the depths of Hell? You'll never hear that from me. Only you and your actions can decide where you go when you leave this world.”
“I would go if it meant I could be with you, you know.”
“You don't know what you're talking about.” As much as I would have loved for that to be the case, her comment angered me. I couldn't imagine a person like her becoming something like me.
“I know that when you're around I feel safe nothing could ever hurt me. I get butterflies in my stomach when you touch me. I know your soul, Ra. I don't know how, but I know. I knew it the second I saw you. You weren't meant for this existence. You fought for good once, and I'm certain you will again.” Etta was strong in words. She spoke with solid confidence. She described what I felt.

Hello and today I would like to welcome Heaven Liegh Eldeen to My Neurotic Book Affair. She has so graciously agreed to be interviewed.

First, tell us a little about yourself so the readers know who you are?

Thank you for having me, Shari. I currently live in California, where I grew up, with my husband and prince of darkness, and Legos, a.k.a my son. I enjoy moonlit walks on the beach…oh, wait, wrong questionnaire. As you can see, I am a serious goofball. Yeah, figure that oxymoron out. Aside from writing, I spend my days doing dishes, kissing owies, obsessing over my Facebook page, and pretending I'm listening when my husband talk about his work.

2) What made you decide to write? Was it something you accidentally began? Or what you wanted to do? Or annoying character who refused to leave until their story was told? 
 
My writing career began with a rivalry between my sister in law Echo and myself. For years we would go fist to cuffs until finally we took a survey of the collateral damages our feuds caused. In an effort to put an end to the squabbling, she gave me a vampire book for my birthday. It was far from the genre I enjoyed reading, but I had to give it a chance, in an effort for peace. A few months and fifteen vampire books later, I expressed to her I wanted something new. She responded with a snippy “Oh, you think you can do better?” Her reply was intended to be a shot at me but I took it as a challenge. Four months later, my first novel was complete and the love for writing had made its home deep within me.
 
3) I love hearing about first acceptances as an aspiring writer can you tell us a bit about yours?

Before I received my first acceptance letter, I was really questioning my abilities as a writer. Rejection letter, after rejection letter filled my inbox. No company I sent my pitch to would even read my manuscript due to my lack of credentials and education. I couldn't really blame them to be honest. I knew being a high school drop out with no writing experience would be a tough sale. And though the rejection letters took a toll on me every now and then, I wasn't going to give up so easily.
Then the big day finally came. No joke, when I read The Demon Side's acceptance letter from Decadent Publishing I cried like a baby for a good hour. I called my husband at work, I couldn't speak, I couldn't breathe, which totally scared him. Fearing an emergency my husband came zooming home. He didn't even clear his motorcycle in the garage when I flung myself into his arms balling my eyes out. He squeezes me and says “Okay baby, tell me why I'm about to go to prison for killing someone.” The man still hadn't figured out I was crying because I was happy.
Finally gathering my composure I told him that my novel was going to be published. Before I could let go of him he began jumping up and down, still holding onto me. We stood there hugging for a good thirty minutes. It is one of my most precious moments ever!
 
4) Tell us about your current release? Where can readers pick up their own copy?

The Demon Side centers around Rahovart, a Demon banished to Earth over five hundred years ago. For centuries, he spends his free time feeding himself on the fear he creates by scaring Quantico, Virginia locals. A master of his craft, Rahovart doesn't think twice when a new family, the Divad's, move into the Victorian home he dwells in.
With a workaholic father, an alcoholic step-mother and a schizophrenic eighteen year old girl, the dysfunctional family unknowingly offers the perfect arsenal for Rahovart to plan his tricks. That is until he learns their daughter; Etta can not only see Demons but is already being tormented by Alastor, an incubus. What starts as a turf war between him, Alastor and the Arch Angels, soon becomes a battle deep within Rahovart of good versus evil and more importantly love versus hate.

5) What are you currently writing?

I am currently putting the finishing touches on The Human Side, sequel to The Demon Side as well as four other novels. I have written another novel, Vineyard House, which is currently in the revision process, so hopefully here soon it will be in editing!

6) What inspires you most when you write?  

Apart from personal life experiences, my family definitely inspires me, without a doubt, to move up and forward. Of course, I must give credit to music as well. A ton of songs on my IPod have given me the courage to push myself farther than I ever imagined I could.

7) What experiences have you had working with your publisher/s?

Everyone at Decadent Publishing has been fabulous from day one. Not once have I felt out of my league. They have been great, walking me through every process step by step and answering my million and one questions about the process as a whole. A special thanks has to go to my editor, Terry MacFarland, since she caught the brunt of most of my newbie questions.

8) What are you reading now?

I am currently reading What Tangled Webs by Dan Dillard. Filled with incredibly scary and yet hilarious short stories, I can't put it down. Next on my “to read” list is 'Steamside Chronicles' by Ciar Cullen. I absolutely love her work.
 
9) What are your guilty pleasures?

Besides hiding the bacon from my husband? I enjoy so much in the world, but none you could say is a guilty pleasure. I do have pleasures that may end up in me having to plead guilty, such as taste testing grapes at the super market. Yes I am that lady!


10) What would be your advice, if any, for other aspiring authors? 

It sounds corny and I am sure you have all heard it all too often, but no advices rings truer than never…ever…never give up. Every rejection letter is one step closer to an acceptance letter. And remember, your success can only be measured by what you put in the scales.

Author Interview with Reena Jacobs of I Loved You First

Hi Reena, thank you so much for joining me today. Before we start I just want to say that I Loved You First was an awesome read! I also loved what you wrote in the Afterwards, wonderfully put.

Thank you. The afterwards was something I debated adding, but eventually thought it was something which needed to be addressed.

2. In 3 words tell us about I Loved You First.

Hopeful love story

3. What would the theme song of your life be?

It used to be Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper. These days? Yesterday by the Beatles.

4. How long did it take you to write I Loved You First?

I chipped away at I Loved You First for a little less than a year. I keep track of my daily word count and was quite surprised to see I put the first words down June 2010. Boy did the time fly.

5. What was the most difficult part of writing I Loved You First?

I Loved You First was actually one of the easiest pieces I’ve tackled. During the last four months, I concentrated on adding 100 words a day to the story. Often I wrote more, but the goal was so small it took the stress of completing I Loved You First out of the picture. By the time I sat to write, my ideas had already formulated in my head. 5-15 minutes of production a night.

Beyond writing, I’d say the editing and polishing was the most difficult. I hate checking my work. :)

6. Do you prefer early morning or late night?

Late night, all the way. I think I went to bed around 2-3 am this morning, which is typical. I generally don’t get up until 10 am – noon.

7. What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Oh my gosh. I’m so mundane. I guess my penchant for showers. One time after receiving feedback which basically said, no way is this going to work, I found myself stuck. How could I salvage what I had? “I need a shower,” I told my husband then returned 30 minutes later with brilliance begging to be written. Without fail, a shower spurs my muse into action.

8. What drew you to write Young Adult fiction?

To tell you the truth, it didn’t occur to me I Loved You First would fit into the YA category until after I finished writing it. I’m not exactly a spring chicken and lacked the confidence to really connect with high schoolers. I didn’t want to write a YA work and have young people roll their eyes, thinking “another old fart trying to play young.” So I stepped it up a little. College – an environment familiar to me. It’s pretty cool to think I can present a work which might appeal to the young and not so young. :)

9. Do you have a favorite place to read and write?

Reading? I love curling up in bed. Writing? Any place I can find the time.

10. Can you tell us a fun fact about you that may not be very well known, give me the scoop?

I turn into an absolute klutz when I’m nervous. When my husband and I were dating, I was a tender bruise. My gosh, I’m surprised he married me. I was a walking disaster.

11. If you were stranded on an island what would you rather have?
Chocolate or Vanilla

Giveaway and Interview with Lacey Weatherford Author of Blood of the White Witch

It is my pleasure to introduce you to Lacey Weatherford author of the Of Witches and Warlocks.

What was your inspiration for the Of Witches and Warlocks series?
It came from a random comment during a hair dying experience with my daughter. It stuck in my head for some reason and wouldn’t let go. I tried to ignore it for about a week, but the ideas kept evolving until I finally decided to write them down so I had them on paper for a later date, but once I started writing, it wouldn’t stop and just started pouring into my head faster than I could keep up with it. Before I knew it I was completely involved and sucked into the project!
When did you decide that you wanted to become a writer? My first attempt at writing was when I was 9 years old. It was a mystery story that starred me and my cousin. I dabbled in writing projects all through my growing up years, from winning essay contests at school to trying my hand at poetry and writing short romantic stories for friends. I always hoped to write a book “someday,” but I had no concrete goal or plan to make that happen until I was in my twenties. Even then it was just a little project of mine so I could say I wrote a book. I certainly never expected it to move on to something like this. That was really just a fluke chance I took that multiplied into something bigger.
What time of day is your favorite time of day? I’m definitely a night owl. I love being out when it’s night time and enjoying all the lights and atmosphere it creates. It’s the most peaceful time of day for me too. Sometimes I get a lot of work done then, others I can just sit and veg for a while and enjoy myself with a good movie or book. I find I’m much more relaxed in the evening.
What's one question you would ask your favorite author? Most of my favorite authors are no longer living, so if I could ask them about something it would probably be for them to tell me about what it was like to live and write in their era. I love history and find hearing tales about it fascinating. I recently attended the RomCon in Denver, and they had a Victorian Fashion Show while I was there and it was amazing. Just the time and effort that went into something like getting dressed every day is unreal. I think we all tend to take our ease of life for granted sometimes. I would totally love getting to hear about their personal experiences!
If you found yourself stranded on an island what three books do you hope you have with you? Hmmm. Tricky question. I have such a hard time deciding between books. I love Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott, and Anne of Green Gables, by L. M. Montgomery so maybe one of those. I’d probably throw a hot romance novel in their as my guilty pleasure, and I would want one of my books so I could keep visiting with Vance! LOL
What's the one place you hope to have the chance to visit?For my whole life, at least as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to go to Italy. I’ve watched travel videos, and often drown myself in picture books of the place too. Here’s a little secret that most people don’t know, but it was my original intent to set Blood of the White Witch in Italy, but then Twilight happened and I felt I couldn’t go there because I wanted to keep my distance from that story. I ended up changing the local to Scotland, which worked out perfectly for the story anyway, so it’s all good.
Do you listen to music as you write? If so what type of music? Yes, always. It helps me to really get in the mood. My playlist consists of mostly pop/rock and alternative, though there are a couple of good “mood” music songs too. I’ve listened to a lot of The Veronicas, Breaking Benjamin, Nickelback, Adam Lambert, Lady Gaga, Ryan Star, Hinder, Selena Gomez, Linkin Park, Blue October, etc., and so on, and so forth.
Do you have any quirky writing rituals? Not really. All I need is my laptop, music, lots of water and a comfy place to sit and I’m usually good to go. I can write pretty much anywhere. I wrote on book five in the series while I was in the airport waiting for my flight to Denver, even. All I need is a little time to sit down and get my head into the story again.

A walking oxymoron.
In three words describe your life?
Fun, crazy, stressful.
In three words describe Blood of The White Witch.
Swoony, emotional, tragic.
Can you share with us a little about what you are currently working on or what you hope to be working on in the near future? Sure! I’m finishing up a few scenes in book five, Possession of Souls, right now and then I will start doing edits on the fantasy/fairytale I’ve written. Both of those will be released in 2012. I also have about six other books currently in the works in various stages of production, so I’m excited to get working on those too. I will be in some big events again in September and October that will give readers the opportunity to get some more books and prizes, so I’m looking forward to that. The Menage A Blog event I just did with the Indie Book Collective was a HUGE success and The Trouble with Spells ended up “winning” that. I was really excited to get to interact with so many readers. They were so supportive of me and it was truly heartwarming.

If Of Witches and Warlocks were to become a t.v. series or movie who would you love to see cast as Portia and Vance? I think Emma Roberts (Hotel for Dogs, Nancy Drew, Scream 4, Twelve) would make a fabulous Portia. She has the right look, and she can pull off both comedy and drama, which are both essential to Portia’s character.

Matt Lanter (9O21O, Vampires Suck, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Liars All) has been Vance since before I wrote the first word about him. I would definitely want him to have the chance to play him, especially since he’s been so kind and such a support to me, not to mention that he has graciously played along with all the crazed “Vance Fans” who see him as the persona for that character.

What is your favorite guilty pleasure?
I have a few. I love eating chocolate, looking at delicious men, and reading swoony romance novels! (Not always in that order!! LOL)

Interview with E. Van Lowe Author of Boyfriend from Hell

Joining me today is Author E. Van Lowe author of the soon to be released Boyfriend from Hell.

Hello and thank you so much for joining me today.

It’s great to be here.

First off could you tell us a little about yourself?

I’m a fun loving writer who likes putting his female protagonists in dangerous yet romantic situations. I grew up in New York City, moved to LA to go to graduate school, and wound up staying in California. I’ve spent most of my career writing television sitcoms and a few movies. I am happy to be returning to my great love—books. I laugh a lot; I love hanging out with my friends and family, and drinking either wine or tequila.

What was your inspiration for Boyfriend from Hell?

When I finished Never Slow Dance With A Zombie (my first YA Paranormal), I was looking for something other than zombies or vampires to get into. I saw a YouTube video for Lucy Daughter of The Devil. It was funny and irreverent. A bell went off in my head—write about the devil. However, as I got into it, I really wanted to explore themes that were close to me, mother/daughter relationships and dating bad boys. Want to know how these two come together? Read the book. LOL.

In three words can you describe Boyfriend from Hell.

Don’t date him!

If you could choose a theme song for Boyfriend from Hell what would it be?

I love music, and I love putting music into my work. There are songs referenced in all my books. For this one, I chose an 80s hit by an Australian group—Men At Work. The song is called Down Under:
“I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

If you think of hell as Down Under, those words are downright chilling.

If Boyfriend from Hell were to be turned into a t.v. series or movie who would you like to see casts as Megan, Suze, Armando, and Guy? 

If I was lucky enough for BFFH to become a movie, I’d like Lucy Hale from Pretty Little Liars to play Meagan; Gail O’Grady, the awesome mom on Hellcats, to play Suze; Taylor Lautner would be an excellent Bad boy as Guy; and Gilles Marini from Brothers & Sisters to play Armando. If you don’t know Gilles, he plays Rachel Griffiths new husband on the show. He’s French and not Spanish, but he’s handsome as hell, so I don’t think the audience would care. LOL. Thanks for asking. It’s fun to dream.

Do you read the same genre of books that you write?

 

I read lots of genres. I have eclectic taste, but I try to keep up with the Paranormal authors as best I can. I have read a lot of Laurell K. Hamilton and Kim Harrison. More recently I’ve read Margaret Stohl and Kami Garcia, as well as Stacey Jay.

What is one of your all time favorite books?

I can name lots of literary titles: Catcher in The Rye, The Invisible Man, Angela’s Ashes, all of which I think are great, but I really love Star Girl by Jerry Spinelli. That little YA book moved me. I think a piece of that boy, Leo Borlock, lives in all of us. Sad to say, but I have been in his shoes, and like him, out of fear, did the wrong thing. There’s a wonderful lesson to be learned in that book.

What have been some of your favorite books so far in 2011?

I just finished Dreams of Joy by Lisa See. Awesome. Loved it. I read and loved the Trylle Trilogy by uberkind, Amanda Hocking, Beautiful Darkness by Stohl and Garcia, but Death On The Delta by Stacey Jay is my new fave. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend it. It’s a great paranormal tale that is very well written, and has the best and most realistic romantic dilemma I have ever read… I sound like her agent. LOL. But seriously, it’s an awesome book.

What do you like to do in your spare non-writing time?

 
I watch my share of TV, like everyone I guess, and am totally into the new season of True Blood. I love sports, and play tennis several days a week. I see an average of four to five movies a month; I travel; work with young writers; I am on the advisory board of Educating Young Minds and Operation Education; I love hanging out, and I already mentioned tequila. And, of course, reading. Phew! I just made myself tired.

When you were little what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a writer… and a basketball player. What can I say, I’m from the hood. I started writing when I was ten, but didn’t get serious about it until I was in college.

When do you realize that you wanted to be a writer?

When I was ten-years-old I got pneumonia during the summer. For a kid who loves the outdoors, being housebound all summer could have been unbearable. Fortunately, my mother knew me well. She said “You love making up stories. Why not write some of them down?” Now, here’s the kicker. She said: “You can make money.” That was all my ten-year-old ears needed to hear. I was already a big reader. I started writing fiction. It got me through the summer, and I’ve been writing ever since.

Can you share a little about what you are currently working on or what you are planning to work on in the near future?

I recently turned in the sequel to Boyfriend From Hell, Earth Angel, to my editor. Oh boy! Now the dreaded editing process begins *sigh*. I am also working on putting together the Never Slow Dance With A Zombie movie musical. I hope by the time this is published, I can say it’s set up somewhere. Fingers and toes crossed ;-)
