Book Blitz: Radiant by Christina Daley

Radiant by Christina Daley
Publication date: February 12th 2013
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance

Mary is part Vietnamese. Carter is a complete jerk. Normally, they don't talk much.

But when Mary's in an accident on the way to school one morning, Carter nearly dies saving her life. The doctors say his chances of living are slim, and Mary's feeling the full weight of survivor's guilt.

However, Carter's back at school in a matter of days, as if nothing had happened. Although, he is a little "glitchy," and he's developed a sudden and intense interest in Mary. She thinks he's suffering from major brain trauma from the accident. Or that he's been possessed.

As it so happens, Carter really is possessed. And the thing controlling him is having the time of its life learning to be human.

Featuring a diverse cast of characters, RADIANT is a funny "paranormal-lite" story about being human, being in love, and being healed.

AUTHOR BIO
Christina Daley made her first book with neighborhood friends when she was four years old. They "wrote" out some semblance of lettering with crayons, cut up a cardboard box for the cover, and bound it all together with clear adhesive tape. It was brilliant.

Quite a few years later, Christina is trying her hand at writing "real" books. She lives in Dallas, Texas, with a pet plant named Herb.

Reviving Bloom Blog Tour & Giveaway

Title: Reviving Bloom
Author: Michelle Turner
Published: Self Published – October 3rd, 2012
Word Count: Approx. 61,000
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance

Synopsis:
Bloom was abandoned by her mother at birth, but thanks to her dad she never once felt unloved. When he is killed in a car wreck, leaving her without any close family, she spends a year mourning him. Her heart has been cut out of her chest and nothing is left but an empty hole that she doesn’t think will ever heal. Then one night after work she finds a wounded dog in the woods behind her house and takes him in, not realizing he’s more than just some stray dog but a wolf shifter, who happens to be her mate.

Pike is getting over the loss of his father by running full force away from his responsibilities. He’s getting ready to go back to face his new position as the Alpha of his pack when he catches the scent that can only belong to his mate.

When Bloom finds out she may not be the normal human she always thought herself to be, she’s forced to search out the woman who abandoned her at birth.

Excerpt:
“Pike, I’m far from perfect,” I sigh, hiding my face back behind the door under the pretense of gathering the cooking supplies. I hear him hop down seconds before I feel his arms wrap around my waist.
His lips pressed to my ear and he whispers, “In my opinion you’re perfect and anyone that disagrees will have to answer to me.” Moving his mouth farther down to the crook in my neck he breathes, “Though you should know this little freckle right here might be the reason you are so perfect.” Then he takes my breath away by planting those deliciously kissable lips right on that freckle. I grab the counter in front of me and slam my eyes closed, praying for him to only move those lips if he’s going to take them from my neck to put them on my mouth, and for the first time since this madness began I thank the lord he can read my thoughts because he spins me around and gives me exactly what I was praying for.
He starts gently but when I throw my arms around his neck digging my fingers into his raven hair his lips become demanding and I part my lips so he can join his tongue with mine. We can’t get close enough, can’t get enough, and in that moment I feel fairly certain I’ll never be able to get enough of this man in my arms. His kisses taste sweeter than hot chocolate, chocolate chip cookies, and hot fudge sundaes combined.

My Thoughts:

Reviving Bloom starts off with an emotional punch. Bloom's father died a year ago and she is still feeling the loss of him like a giant weight on her heart. Since her mother walked out of her life the day after she was born it had been just her and her dad, saying they were close would be a complete understatement. He was her world.

Then one night after another day of barely getting by, Bloom hears a "dog" outside of her house and he sounds hurt. She rushes out to help him and then everything changes. She brings him home to clean up his wound and starts to feel her heart healing with his presence. After introducing Pike to the local vet who happens to be her best friend Bonnie's father and her "Uncle" Billy things start to become clearer to us, the readers.

I have to say for the most part I really enjoyed Reviving Bloom it has a nice twist on the werewolf myth which keeps it from reading like just another werewolf book, if you know what I mean. There are lots of struggles and touching moments that help you get to know the characters better throughout the story. My only complaint and this is really just a personal issue was that I was able to get to know Pike first as he was in wolf form and I really liked him. Once he becomes a man and starts to interact with the other characters as a man I didn't like him quite as much and I was never able to understand exactly why that was. My best guess was that his "voice" wasn't as I expected it would be. Maybe it was the constant "darlings". This didn't stop me from getting into the story and now I really hope that Michelle writes a book about Bonnie (she was my favorite character).

If you love those alpha male types that happen to turn a bit furry on occasion then you should grab yourself a copy of Reviving Bloom.

My Review:
I absolutely love love love the idea behind Flight! Finally, a paranormal plot that is original and unique. Alyssa Rose Ivy took the paranormal romance formula and twisted it around to be new and exciting. I loved her spin on the different shifters. The writing is fast paced and fun to read and never let's you become bored or uninterested.
I could have been completely in love with Flight if not for two problems I had. First, the ending. This book ended so abruptly that I had to go searching on the internet to make sure I wasn't missing part of the book. The second problem for me was the romance part of Flight. I felt like there was no build up to the falling in love between Allie and Levi. I wanted to have more of a spark and passion and I don't know....more.
Once Levi stopped acting like such a player I really started to like him, and his friend Owen was totally awesome. I'm really hoping for more Owen in the next book. For some reason though I had a really hard time connecting to Allie. I felt like she was cold and distant throughout most of the book and I had a hard time seeing why Levi developed such intense feelings for her.

Plot: Fresh new idea
Characters: Some were great others were meh
Writing: Easy to get caught up in
Ending: UGH! I really hated where this book ended, it didn't feel like an ending
Mature Content: There is mentions of drinking and and some non graphic sexy times
Overall: I liked Flight and I will definitely be checking out book 2 (Focus, coming January 2013) to find out what will happen with Levi and Allie and the entire New Orleans paranormal community.
Recommendation: If you are a fan of paranormal and you want something different then you should definitely check out Flight. Even though I felt like this book wasn't perfect it was still worth reading.

CIN A Review, A Giveaway, and A Contests Oh My!

Cin
by Christina Leigh Pritchard
Genre: YA

Blurb:
Seventeen year old Lisa Brown’s life is falling apart. First, her mother and father divorce, then their house forecloses and now, her mother has decided to commit herself to a psychiatric hospital.

If that weren’t enough, she must leave sunny south Florida to attend a boarding school full of geniuses in cold, Lynn, Massachusetts. The city where the locals chant “Lynn, Lynn, city of sin; you never come out the way you went in.”

And, they aren’t kidding. Lisa must live in a tiny shack with two strange teenagers, a dog named Pig who growls when you look at him and a cat named Rat. “Mind the cat,” everyone says. What the heck is wrong with this place?

Lisa thinks she’s landed in her own house of horrors with the anti-social Alex and his facetious sister Ally. But, the real drama begins the day she is struck by lightning…

About the Author:

Christina Leigh Pritchard was born and raised in South Florida. Her first stories were written at the age of nine in $0.15 wide ruled, spiral notebooks (which were supposed to be used for class), and in the various diaries she kept. Stories she wrote from age nine to twelve fill about four storage boxes!

My Thoughts:
Lisa Brown has not had an easy time of life and things just got worse. This book starts of feeling like a YA contempory novel, though once Lisa arrives at CIN that all changes. That's when the  mystery starts to build and then build some more. For a little while I had no idea what was going on I just knew that some strange shizz was happening.

Alex and Ally the kids that live next door are so strange and a bit creepy. Lisa's aunt keeps disappearing, and you can't touch the cat or dog, what? Pritchard starts dropping some hints about them along the way, and then I started thinking I was figuring things out (except for the dog and cat thing, that took me a while).

All in all I enjoyed this novel, however it definitely wasn't perfect... like there should be contractions in a book. Especially when people are talking. Things jumped around a bit more than I thought they should have. I almost think that the book should be longer giving more time to delve into the story. A great idea with a few technical flaws. A few things are left unanswered but of course there are more books to come.

Neurotic Thoughts - Ember

Ember
Author: Madison Daniel
Release Date: March 16, 2012
Genre: YA Paranormal
Published by: Crushing Hearts and Black Butterflys Publishing
Source: Bewitching Book Tours
Summary from Goodreads:

Love never dies...but it can kill.

Ember is the story of Max Valentine, a teenager with secret abilities and many inner demons. His life revolves around music and his love for it. When his father dies he seeks answers with his last living relative, his fathers brother Frank. Frank lives on the island of Maui and eagerly takes Max in as his own. Max soon learns that healing his past will be more difficult than he could have ever believed. Two major complications will tempt and torment him as he tries to make sense of his abilities.

The first temptation comes in the form of a mysterious island girl. Asia Lyn Michaels is rich, spoiled, angry and beautiful. Her path crosses with Max on the beach one afternoon, forever changing both of their lives. Max saves her life and she discovers his secret. From that moment on they are connected, no matter how much they fight it.

The second temptation will test Max’s very soul. Samantha Ann Summers is sweet, artistic, smart and confident. She will help Max find his smile again and maybe even heal his past mistakes. She is possibly his soul mate and Max will fight that with every fiber of his being.

Max’s temper and indecision with the girls will send in motion events that will cost him dearly. He will test the limits of his powers and the new relationship with his protective uncle. He will gain a powerful love and lose another.

My Thoughts:
I liked it, I didn't like it. I loved Max, I hated Max. Ugh, this book had me going back and forth about on my feelings for the characters of this book. Everything I liked about this book I disliked too. The girls were strong and kick ass one minute and the next they were sniveling begging babies. Max made horrible choices and really just pissed me off over and over again to the point where I would groan and have to put the book down.

What I liked:
I loved all of the music involved in Ember. Max and his band and all of the music that he listened too really helped give me something to connect with.
Samantha was probably my favorite character even though she put up with so much crap from Max and all of his wishy washy ways.
I enjoyed the mystery surrounding Max, Samantha, and Asia and what and who they were.

What I didn't like:
It was really hard to connect with these characters. Max wanted Sam one minute and Asia the next and both girls were willing to almost share him. Come on dude pick a girl and stick with her and girls don't let your man treat you like this!
Asia, I really didn't like her very much at all! Her character was abrasive and stuck up and I really just... well... hated her.

Even though this wasn't my favorite book, it wasn't all bad. The writing is actually pretty good and the story wasn't half bad either.

Plot: A pretty original YA paranormal actually
Characters: Inconsistent, weak, my least favorite part of the novel
Writing: Entertaining, surprisingly mysterious (I'm not counting the editing mistakes here)
Ending: Frustrating in the extreme
Kid Friendly: There are some pretty sexy,  super hot scenes
Overall: This one just didn't do it for me, the characters annoyed me to the point that I had a hard time really getting into this one
Should I Read This Book: If you are a lover of YA paranormal with lots of mystery, sexual tension, and love triangles you will probably like Ember

I hate writing reviews that are anything but glowing, but I have to be honest and tell it the way I see it. Luckily everyone has different tastes and here are a few glowing reviews.

Teaser Tuesday (4/3/2012) Rise From Darkness by Ciara Knight

"Your legs got tangled in some weeds. I heard you screaming from down the beach. It took some effort but I was able to free you."
Her head spun. Kelp? "No that's not what happened." Seaweed didn't burn or have cruel laughter. Her head throbbed at the memory.

Teaser from page 10

Summary from Goodreads:
Alexander Lorre gives new meaning to the term “tormented teen”. He’s a newly fallen angel, which means he has the self-control of a three-year-old, the hormones of a teenager and the strength of an angel. When he rescues Gaby Moore from drowning, the chemistry between them is undeniable. With a local demon threatening Gaby’s life, he struggles to find a balance between remaining close enough to protect her but distant enough to control his desires.

As danger draws closer, Gaby uncovers shattering secrets that will lead to an ultimate choice. Will she fight alongside her father, an earthbound hunter killing fallen angels and demons, give into the demon blood coursing through her veins and join the demon world, or save the man she loves from both? The first two choices damn her, but the last one could destroy them all.

Rise From Darkness was released on March 19, 2012

Miz B hosts Teaser Tuesday every week, check her out for the official rules.  I never seem to be able to stick to the rule about only 2 sentences.
I love reading teasers so let me know where I can view yours in the comments. Have a great day!

Neurotic Thoughts on Obsidian (Lux #1)

Obsidian (Lux #1)
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Release Date: December 6, 2011
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance
Published by: Entangled Publishing
Source: Bought for myself
Summary from Goodreads:

Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring…. until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something…unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don’t kill him first, that is.

Loved this book! Loved IT!!! Some of my first thoughts about Obsidian: so far my favorite book of 2012, writing is fast paced, and will keep you turning the pages with lightning speed. To be honest I was so caught up in the story that I didn't pay that much attention to the technical aspects of the writing so we are just going to assume that it was excellent.

Katy our main character is fabulous in so many ways. First off she is a book blogger which as a book blogger, and the mom of two book bloggers was fun for me. She's vulnerable but not in the kind of way that allows her to put up with anyone's crap. Plus she is adorably snarky, witty and just plain hilarious.

Daemon's character is SO confusing, and I can't imagine having to put up with his array of crap on a daily basis. However, Daemon is hot, not just hot but HOT!!! Not that looks are everything and sometimes I find the "but he's so dreamy" thing to be a bit overdone but Jennifer pulled it off perfectly!  Plus, he has reasons for the way he acts. The chapter after the book is over is written strictly in Daemon's voice and trust me it will have you falling in love with him if you haven't by the time you finish the book, trust me on this.

The chemistry between Daemon and Katy is the best of any YA book that I have read so far. By this I mean that there are a few scenes that remain fairly innocent but will have you fanning your blushing face. Oh yeah, it's that good.

The only complaint I have is that the fight scene at the end was a little confusing. I had to read it a few times because it seemed a tad bit jumpy. I was unable to figure out exactly what had happened during this scene.

I am really excited for Onyx the next book in the series and I haven't been able to stop telling people about this book. The story line is original (at least to me it is) and the writing flows wonderfully. Jenifer Armentrout just became one of my favorite authors. I will be buying up everything I can find by her.

Neurotic Thoughts - Ripple

Ripple
Author: Mandy Hubbard
Release Date: July 21, 2011
Genre: YA Paranormal
Published by: Razorbill/Penguin
Source: My wonderful daughter Allison from Shorty Reads
Summary from Goodreads:
Lexi is cursed with a dark secret. The water calls to her, draws her in, forces her to sing her deadly song to unsuspecting victims. If she succumbs, she kills. If she doesn't, the pain is unbearable. To keep herself and those she cares about safe, she shuts herself off, refusing to make friends or fall in love-again. Because the last time she fell in love with a boy, he ended up dead.
Then Lexi finds herself torn. Against her better judgement, she's opening up agian, falling in love with someone new when she knows she shouldn't. But when she's offered the chance to finally live a normal life, she learns that the price she must pay to be free or her curse is giving him up.
At the constant insistence of my wonderful daughter I finally picked up Ripple. I had to thank her for shoving this book in my face because it really was quite good.

Poor Lexi has no idea how she killed her boyfriend on her sixteenth birthday but she is deteremined to never kill anyone again. Since that horrible night she has shut herself off from everyone. All of her old friends bully her now because they all believe that she had something to do with his death.

I love how a really well written character, paranormal or not can seem like a real person. Lexi's pain felt so real throughout this book. When Cole, her past boyfriend's best friend starts to show an interest in her she wants to stay away, she really does. He finally shows her that not everyone thinks she was the cause of her boyfriend's death.

Then along comes Erik. He knows what she is. He knows how to fix her, and he is pretty darn awesome. He is everything she needs, and even though Cole is everything she wants she knows that Erik is the right choice. Until being with Erik just starts to feel wrong, and she can't get Cole out of her head.

I loved the twist in this book. I was completely blown away and couldn't believe how wrong I had been. The characters are pretty great from damaged Lexi, to her grandma in the sweats sitting in her recliner. Cole is an amazing guy that will have you wondering why your boyfriend isn't quite that sweet. Erik, oh Erik, that's all I have to say about him. Ripple is a quick read and guess what? It's not a series or a trilogy it's a stand alone novel. Ripple isn't like the few other mermaid books I've read (not that I've read many). I really enjoyed the legend behind what she is, and wish that they story had delved just a little deeper into that. Overall a quick enjoyable read!
