Summary from Goodreads:
Pearl is a sixteen-year-old vampire... fond of blood, allergic to sunlight, and mostly evil... until the night a sparkly unicorn stabs her through the heart with his horn. Oops.
Her family thinks she was attacked by a vampire hunter (because, obviously, unicorns don't exist), and they're shocked she survived. They're even more shocked when Pearl discovers she can now withstand the sun. But they quickly find a way to make use of her new talent. The Vampire King of New England has chosen Pearl's family to host his feast. If Pearl enrolls in high school, she can make lots of human friends and lure them to the King's feast -- as the entrees.
The only problem? Pearl's starting to feel the twinges of a conscience. How can she serve up her new friends—especially the cute guy who makes her fangs ache—to be slaughtered? Then again, she's definitely dead if she lets down her family. What's a sunlight-loving vamp to do?
My Thoughts:
My first thoughts when I read the summary for this book.....What?! Vampires AND Unicorns! I must read this book!!!! Drink Slay Love is a highly entertaining read with amazing characters and an exciting new look at vampires. You won't find any sparkly vampires here, but there is a sparkly unicorn that just might float your boat.
It just so happens that if you are a vampire that gets stabbed in the chest by a sparkly unicorn you wake up to find that you can withstand the sun completely with no ill effects whatsoever! Pearl finds this out first hand one night after a late night snack at her favorite ice cream joint. Now her very scary family has a job for her. One that could make or break her family in the vampire world.
I had an amazing time getting sucked into this story, and fell in love with the characters. Pearl's sarcasm is dead pan and hilarious. I love that even when faced with adversity Pearl wasn't a whiny weak character, she stayed strong through it all. The way people were drawn to her reminded me of how cat's always gravitate to people who hate cats. Evan is super scrumptious and completely sweet. Bethany is that perky, always happy girl that you want to say drives you nuts but secretly you really love her. There is no way I can leave out Zeke and Matt the Bill and Ted of the book, they were absolutely hilarious.
Unicorns=automatic read for me. Thanks for the awesome review! I can't wait to read this.
